What is a local node in QW2023 and how to organize it?

A local node is an event organized autonomously by a group of people in coordination with the QW2023 organizing team during the days of Queering Wikipedia 2023, optionally extending to before and after.

Its purpose follows the same as the main QW2023 conference: to advance outreach, engage and connect the Wikimedia Queer community, but with local/regional and/or thematic focus. A city or regional focus is preferred over a national or ethnic focus; thematic nodes are an option if integrated into the program.

Local node events can take place in any region of the world, as trans-locality is desired, representation is less important.

Organizing a local node event together with your local community should help support people who are new to Wikimedia LGBT+ and promote community building in a safe(er) space. It could also offer an alternative to people who cannot join international in-person events, especially if physical, financial or legal mobility is an issue.

If you're looking for information and recommendations on how to ensure a successful event for everyone involved, be sure to check out the node guidelines page. It offers practical tips and guidelines to help you prepare effectively before the event and manage it smoothly on the day.

Checklist to organize a local node event

Checklist to organize a local node event

Are you enthusiastic and committed to organizing a local node event?

Here’s a list of things to keep in mind:

  1. Don’t do it all on your own! Do it with us and others.
    • Reach out to us and connect your fellow Wikimedians, LGBTQ+ activists, maybe Wikimedia chapter or user group you know.
    • Start discussions, create a group (3 is already a team) to work together on helping you to organize the event.
  2. Consider how to frame the event
    • Is it an informal watch party where only popcorn and internet access is needed?
    • Is it a bigger group that might want to secure translation/presentation service?
    • What could be your goals? What is the size and type of audience you desire?
    • How will your event connect with the main event and/or other local node events?
  3. Define the logistics aspects of the event
    • Where will it take place?
    • When, and for how long? How many people do you expect to show up?
    • What will they need to join and contribute? What would be the content of the event?
    • Would you contribute to QW2023 online?
  4. Define and reach out to the people you will need to run the event
    • Do you need people with specific skills? Speakers or facilitators?
    • Helpers for the logistics aspects? Security and/or safety team?
    • We encourage you to look for these people within your local community and support people looking to gather some experience in facilitation, event organization, etc.
  5. Local partnering and/or renting?
    • We strongly encourage you to find a local partner to help you with the logistics of the event — depending on the context, you can reach out to a local university, library or organization for space, but we also might be able to help you pay for rented space.
    • Reach out to your local LGBTQ+ Wikimedian friends and wider communities on their favorite channels and general LGBTQ+ channels, to let people know that the event will be happening.

If you want to exchange with people who are interested in Queering Wikipedia or local node events organizers, feel free to use the Wikimedia LGBT+ channels. If you have specific questions for the Queering Wikipedia organizing team, feel free to write at QW2023(_AT_)WmLGBT.org and we can organize a coordination call with you.
