Brion Vibber gained the position of lead developer on the MediaWiki software project the old-fashioned way: he inherited it.
Esperanto was the method by which Brion became involved with Wikipedia; he was interested in learning the language, and began working on the Esperanto Wikipedia site as an excercise. Almost immediately he became involved in developing unicode support for the language in the MediaWiki software, which led to ever more involvement in the software development. (To the detriment of his language studies as well, though he can still hold up his end of a conversation.)
In 2003 Brion took over the duties of lead developer after the implementation of Phase III of the software, and has led the developers since. He was
