English to Akan Translation in 2012 edit

This project is on hold for lack of contribution from Akan writers. We were translating English to Akan with the Google Translate Toolkit platform. This project was to help improve the number of Ghanaians who can contribute to the Akan Wikipedia website.

Wikinews and Ghana Election 2012 coverage edit

1. Due to anticipated political tensions, we rather opted to embark on a Wikipedia election project rather than an exclusive Ghana Election 2012 coverage via Wikinews.

We had Wiki For Election 2012 Ghana from December 2012 to January 2013.

Some PWMGH members represented the team at Barcamp Accra. They represented Wikimedia Foundation and PWMGH as a group to introduce new and some old contributors to Wikimedia Foundation's projects.

About 5 new members joined as a result of the exposure at the BarCamp. (More images to be uploaded once copyright issues are sorted)

Challenges of current outreach

  • Strikes in Schools
  • External Examinations for Final Year Students
  • Lack of budget for event promotion in tertiary communities
  • Internet accessibility for individual editing beyond group trainings
  • Internet accessibility for some considered schools
  • Interruption of Accra training schedules by power outage from March - April
  • Delay in arrival and clearing of souvenirs which is the only incentive for editing


Measures of Success

  1. How many articles and photos were written and uploaded at the end of the project?
  2. How many people signed up for Wikimedia account as at the end of the outreach?
  3. How many Wikimedia clubs were established in various visited High Schools outreach?
  4. How many articles were improved and or added about Ghana during our various Wikipedia-related edit-a-thons?
  5. How many recipes and corresponding images were submitted?
  6. Did we successfully get any professional writers, bloggers and/or journalists to contribute articles and news and

BarCamp Ho Outreach 2013 edit

At BarCamp Ho our session focused on improving of Ho, Ghana, UHAS, Ho Polytechnic, Ewe Wikipedia, Educational Institutions and more coverage of various tourist attractions in the Volta Region such as Mount Afadjato, Wli Waterfalls, Tagbo Falls. Blog post here


BarCamp Tema Outreach 2014 edit

At BarCamp Tema our session focused on a hands on that saw participants through a hands on, on the various Wikimedia projects with a special emphasis on how to contribute to Wikipedia.

The event was held on March 22, 2014 at the Tema Roatary Club House.

Wiki Loves Earth Ghana 2014 edit

PWMGH has taken part in this years Wiki Loves Earth photo contest from the 1 May 2014 to 30 June 2014. It it has seen 849 photos uploaded. The WINNERS are currently being worked on. (This was done without any grant from the Wikimedia Foundation)

It was mainly focused on communicating the mission of the Wikimedia Foundation and its goals for Africa. We aligned the purpose of the Planning Wikimedia Ghana to that of the foundation, explained the need to be a part of us and the essence in contributing knowledge for the use of all.

The opportunity was also taken to recruit new members and running them through the a hands on of the tools and necessary mark ups used in a wiki.

It was mainly focused on communicating the mission of the Wikimedia Foundation and its goals for Africa. We aligned the purpose of the Planning Wikimedia Ghana to that of the foundation, explained the need to be a part of us and the essence in contributing knowledge for the use of all.

It entailed a keynote presentation which tackled our status as open to all hence our affiliation with the open source community. How one could be a part of us and a few announcement of upcoming events and competitions such as Wiki Loves Africa.

A workshop session was hosted after which saw participants through basic edits.

BarCamp Tamale Outreach 2014 edit

Date: 04 August, 2014

Venue: Tamale Sports Stadium, Tamale A session was organized to introduce participants to Wikimedia projects and also guide them as how to contribute the the various projects.

Wiki Loves Africa 2014 edit

The Wikimedia Ghana User Group joins the rest of Africa to partake in the Wiki Loves Africa campaign which begins on the 1st October to 30th November 2014.

The campaign seeks to document in the form of various media, the diverse types of cuisines across the continent of Africa. The theme will encompass the "foods", "dishes", "crops", "husbandry", "culinary art", "cooking methods", "utensils", "food markets",traditional symbols and arts "festivals", "culinary events", "famine food" and any other issues related to cuisine on the African continent.

A jury of two, selected 2 best images from Ghana uploaded during the event. The Jury consisted of Doris Anson (from Ghana) and Rasco (likely from Colombia)

Wikipedia Editor Retention Program is designed to boost Ghana's presence on English Wikipedia, by encouraging Ghanaians to donate 5 edits to Ghanaian topics on the English Wikipedia every month. It started in February. Find out more or join on here.
