Proposed Participation
editValeriej: I am an OPW alum, and I worked in bug management triaging bug reports, organizing bug days, and investigating Wikipedia and MediaWiki support and feedback channels. I've also worked with templates and Lua on a feature request table for Wikipedia's Tea House
DNarvaez: I started familiarizing with Mediawiki by doing administration tasks for several wikis in local and regional free software communities. I later used my knowledge in wikitext to help the organization of Wiki Loves Monuments Panama 2012, where I also got involved with running bots in different Wikimedia projects. After attending the Amsterdam Hackathon, I have contributed patches to Pywikibot, Mediawiki and Extensions, and helping in the organization of Wiki Loves Monuments 2013 by developing a Jury Tool.
Valeriej and DNarvaez will be leading Grace Hopper Open Source day participants in making contributions, possibly their first, to Wikimedia. There will be different contribution opportunities at different skill levels and in different interest areas.
We're requesting support for two facilitators because it is our first time leading this event. With two facilitators who have experience in different areas of contribution, the Open Source Day participants will get the support they need in a timely manner and we will be better able to keep track of the participant's progress and address their needs accordingly.
Goal and Expected Impact
editGrace Hopper Open Source Day helps show that making open source contributions can be fulfilling in many ways. The goal of this session is to get long-term contributors to MediaWiki by helping them set up and get familiar with contributing when they have someone to help and answer their questions.
