Proposed Participation
editAbout DISH
editDISH is an international conference about "digital strategies for heritage." The themes for this year revolve around crowdsourcing and co-creation, business for heritage (money or mission, or both?), institutional change, and building a new public space (virtual meeting spaces). Keynote speakers include Michael Edson, head of new media at the Smithsonian, where I serve as Wikipedian in Residence, and Samuel Jones from Demos. Speakers represent cultural heritage organizations from around the world, including Wikimedia Netherlands own Maarten Dammers who will be presenting on Wiki Loves Monuments.
My role
editI will be in the Netherlands for GLAMcamp 2011, funded by WM Netherlands. I actually had a submitted presentation accepted for DISH2011 but did not think I'd be able to have funding to attend, so I had to decline. Now that I will be in the area and able to take the time, I am seeking WMF financial support to attend. The re-addition of my presentation about WikiProject Public art is being considered by planners. Regardless, my attendance at DISH will allow me to not only share the work of GLAM WIKI volunteers and participants around the world, with an international stage, but I will also be able to learn more about European museum and cultural heritage culture - providing strong professional development as I am a masters student in museum studies.
I would be attending alongside Liam Wyatt, Maarten Dammers and Maarten Brinkerink, the latter two of Wikimedia Netherlands. I would be the only person representing the GLAM WIKI US community at DISH2011.
How this will help further the mission of the Wikimedia Foundation
editThe mission of the Wikimedia Foundation is to empower and engage people around the world to collect and develop educational content under a free license or in the public domain, and to disseminate it effectively and globally.
Attending DISH2011 allows for further exploration of cultural partnerships between GLAMs internationally and Wikimedia. As someone who continues to volunteer her time to further the mission of the Foundation, the Foundation can use this opportunity to allow me to be "empowered" to share that mission and to "engage" with other professionals in the field regard the potential for opportunities. Museums and cultural heritage organizations missions generally coincide with WMF's mission (and vision statement), thus funding me to attend this conference will allow for those missions to meet and further partnership opportunities.
Goal and Expected Impact
editI seek to meet with GLAM professionals and share events and activities that have proven successful in GLAM WIKI projects and partnerships. If opportunities are available for lightning talks or unconferences I will be seeking to participate (PowerPoints in hand!) to share GLAM WIKI work with conference attendees. I hope to leave DISH2011 better educated on international GLAM affairs, the future of technology in GLAMs, and also with opportunities for new partnerships to be distributed amongst interested Wikimedians.
