Open Culture/GLAM Glossary/Introduction

Introduction and scope

edit

This is an ongoing participatory effort to co-create and enrich a multilingual glossary of terms and concepts on Open Culture/GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums) with the intention:

  • to provide working definitions and rich descriptions of these terms and concepts from existing glossaries, as well as from the bibliography we are collecting and beyond. (For more information about this bibliography, see Zotero Library).
  • to update and adapt these definitions and descriptions, and provide references for them.
  • to help researchers, students, educators, professionals, and the public clarify/understand their meaning and context.
  • to make the concepts available as tags for the Zotero Group Library and vice versa.
  • to motivate users to see if and how these descriptions are reflected in related Wikipedia entries (in all existing languages), and edit them so as to include the Open Culture/GLAM point of view in them.

The co-creation and enrichment of this glossary is a project that started in 2022 by Working Group: Open GLAM Resources of the Creative Commons Open Culture Platform.

About the terms and concepts

edit

The glossary mainly includes terms and concepts used in the Open Culture/GLAM context and movement, but may also include terms and concepts from the wider open movement and the digital shift, as long as they relate with Open Culture/GLAM.

About the publishing platform

edit

We are using Meta-Wiki as a publishing platform because:

  • Meta-Wiki (as all Wikimedia Foundation’s projects) is an independent open-source project.
  • Meta-Wiki allows for crowdsourcing information and collaboration.
  • Meta-Wiki pages can be easily translated into other languages, and enriched and adapted based on local needs and contexts.
  • Meta-Wiki can be easily connected with other Wikimedia projects and especially Wikidata.

Open invitation to contribute

edit

We are inviting the open community to contribute to the creation and enrichment of this glossary by adding terms and concepts that fall within its scope.

If you are unfamiliar with Meta-Wiki, or unsure what to add or how to add it, we have prepared this How-to-Edit guide.

Please note that, in order to add terms and concepts, you will need to make a Wikipedia / Wikimedia account and follow the guidelines.

Disclaimer

edit

Information in the glossary has been jointly authored for public reference and research purposes.
