Odia Wikimedians User Group/Events/Wiki Loves Folklore (WLF) 2023

Feminism and Folklore is an international writing contest, photo uploading to Wikicommons organized at Wikipedia annually in the month of February and March to document folk cultures and women in folklore in different regions of the world on Wikipedia. This project is the Wikipedia edition of the photography campaign Wiki Loves Folklore (WLF) that is organized on Wikimedia Commons to document folklore traditions around the world.

The Odia Wikimedians User Group has been participating in the writing competition since the beginning. This year the user group has a small workshop and in-person event in Bhadrak, Odisha.

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Yes, we are happy to conduct a small workshop after a lot of time. Previously, it was planned for an offline edit-a-thon, but organized a workshop. It was the first workshop organized at Bhadrak. We had invited a few local writers to join the workshop and this workshop was focused on Wikipedia.

More than 10 people were invited to the workshop, but 7 have joined this workshop. Since it was a small workshop and organized in the afternoon, the organizer conducted the sessions by himself. The workshop was focused on creating awareness about Wikipedia, the rules for article creation, and the procedures to create articles. However, out of 7, 6 users joined instantly and later participated in the edit-a-thon. Everyone had created (translated from English) one article each. Participation certificated were distributed to all the attendees.

What worked well? What didn't work so well? What would you do differently next time?

Since, it was a small workshop, it was not easy to make them understand about the editing process properly. However, a small get-together was organized after the workshop. It was really late to receive the amount, so the workshop was conducted just before 3 days of the deadline.
