Minor edits are those for which the editor clicked a little check box that says "this is a minor edit".

For some reason, people think this is significant, and there are various lists that exclude, or give an option to exclude, minor edits.

Reasons why the minor edit mark is useless:

  • By popular demand, the check box has been disabled for anonymous users. This is apparently intended to fight the threat of vandalism by making it harder for people who choose to not see minor edits to not see minor edits by those who are not logged in. The effect, however, is to piss everyone off whenever some anon comes in and makes a million grammar fixes -- and can't use the minor edit checkbox and moreover doesn't even know it exists
  • Marking something minor doesn't, of course, prove that it's minor. Automatic checking of minority by, say, bytes changed would be possible but still incomplete. Small numbers of changed bytes can make a big difference if key statements are negated!
  • blah blah blah
