Object to public requests

I don't think requests ought to be permitted to be made in public. If, say, someone asks to check en:User:Querulous against IP user 123.456.789.101 then people may well jump to conclusions and begin labelling that user a sockpuppet, etc. without proof. Also, users may begin pestering stewards for the outcome; if it was negative, then the steward has no right to reveal their findings, and if positive; they still should act with caution. Either way, users are going to make assumptions based on the response, which I don't find to be in good community spirit. Rob Church Talk 01:35, 9 November 2005 (UTC)

If requests are handled secretly, there is no possibility for the community to control how the stewards and checkuser appointees perform their tasks, whether in accordance with the policy or not. Secrecy is the mother of irresponsibility. Teofilo 12:25, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

This page is for wikis where there is no checkuser. For this you need to follow EN wikipedia policy. Stewards are not allowed to override that. --Walter 14:49, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
