Wikipedians taking the air
Mainly a casual social event. You can expect to meet some very keen Wikipedians; however, this is also an open invitation to anyone interested in finding out more about Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, projects re-using Wikipedia, and other collaborative wiki projects. Feel free to come along and raise these discussions over a beer. Alcohol consumption is optional.
People of all ages and all Wikimedia projects are welcome. Complete newbies also welcome!
Please also invite any London Wikimedia people you know (or have had wiki dealings with) – spread the word!
Topics and events
editWe discussed at the previous London meetup and decided to move this one to 2 April (the first Sunday instead of the second) as a one off, since many people wouldn't be able to make it on Easter Sunday. the wub "?!" 09:07, 14 March 2023 (UTC)

edit* Like to but a time-crunch issue is likely to arise for me. -- DeirgeDel tac 19:15, 14 March 2023 (UTC)
Fingers crossed. Thryduulf (talk: meta · en.wp · wikidata) 22:36, 15 March 2023 (UTC)Sorry, things have come up that I need to deal with. Thryduulf (talk: meta · en.wp · wikidata) 12:05, 2 April 2023 (UTC)- Seems likely that I'll be free. Joseph2302 (talk) 12:08, 21 March 2023 (UTC)
- Greetings, UK Wikipedians! I am a US Wikipedian who happens to be on holiday in London this week. I hope to be able to attend the meetup as I've never been able to do so in the US. Jeremy Butler (talk) 07:37, 28 March 2023 (UTC)
- @Jeremy Butler Excellent, if you can make it you'll be very welcome! the wub "?!" 21:24, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
- @the wub Alas, I don't think I'll be able to make it. I'm going to go on the Oh What a Circus... The Elephants Escape walking tour this morning. I would attempt to go directly from it to the Meetup (though I might not have the energy for it anyway), but it appears that the London Landmarks Half Marathon route goes along High Holborn, right by the Pub! I'm concerned that bus/train routes will be affected. Sorry to miss out! (Attendees might want to take this into consideration as they plan their own routes to the Meetup.) -Jeremy Butler (talk) 07:01, 2 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Jeremy Butler Enjoy the walk, sounds interesting! Thanks for the heads up about the half marathon, I didn't know about that. Buses along High Holborn will be affected, but I think most people get here by going to Holborn tube station and walking along the street which should still be fine (just maybe a bit busier than usual). the wub "?!" 09:43, 2 April 2023 (UTC)

- I have to pass through London on Sunday or Monday. If it's Sunday I'll call in. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 19:30, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
- Maybe. Andrew D. (talk) 19:44, 31 March 2023 (UTC)
Interested but not attending
edit- Multiple reasons why I should aim at targetting Portsmouth 3 towards the end of the month. Infinite time and I'd do both. -- DeirgeDel tac 07:56, 16 March 2023 (UTC)
- @DeirgeDel ping me if you set something up for Portsmouth. I'm (normally) on the south coast between there and Brighton. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 19:29, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
- @HJ Mitchell We've planned a Portsmouth meetup for Sunday 23 April. Would be great to see you if you can make it! the wub "?!" 21:19, 30 March 2023 (UTC)

Would have attended if the date hadn´t changed

About the meetup
editLondon meetups are generally casual social events where we...
- Drink coffee, beer, tea and some of us have Sunday brunch. Sunday roasts are no longer offered but they do a reasonable pizza now and have a range of other snacks and dishes.
- Welcome guests from around the world and other groups which meet there
- Chat about Wikimedia or any other topics
- Experienced Wikimedians help out new editors and share experiences about anything from copyright to editing tools.
You can expect to meet some very keen Wikimedians; however, this is also an open invite for anyone interested in finding out more about Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects such as Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, and Wikisource.
New and prospective editors are also very welcome.
The pub is quite quiet and family-friendly on a Sunday lunchtime, so younger Wikimedians will also feel welcome and safe. Alcohol consumption is not compulsory!
Disabled access
editThe pub has an accessible loo on the ground floor. There are some sections of the pub that are only accessible by steps, but we always meet in the main step free section, usually opposite the main doors.
Location: Penderel's Oak
editThe Penderel's Oak is a Wetherspoons pub in Holborn.
Address: 283-288 High Holborn, London, WC1V 7HP (OpenStreetMap) (Google Maps)
It's easy to find us – we're usually the crowd with several laptops on the large tables straight ahead of you when you enter the pub. If not, then look for a tabletop Wikimedia/Wikipedia poster and laptops with Wikipedia stickers on them. Wikimania t-shirts can also be a good clue.
Getting there
edit |
Chancery Lane | 0.2 miles
(350 m) |
Holborn | ||
Farringdon | 0.5 miles
(800 m) | |
Temple |
The Penderel's Oak is between Holborn tube station and Chancery Lane tube station. Farringdon station and Temple tube station are not too far. The pub is also within walking distance of Waterloo railway station (1.3 miles; 2 km), St Pancras railway station (1.2 miles; 1.9 km) and Kings Cross.
Several bus routes also go directly to Holborn station; if travelling from Waterloo, it is quicker to travel by bus than by tube.
Bike hire (TfL scheme) is in Red Lion Street, just opposite the pub.
Visit the TfL Journey Planner for more information about your fastest route.
Back-up plan
editIn the rare event of a kitchen closure or another problem at the Penderel's Oak, the meetup will be relocated to the Shakespeare's Head – another Wetherspoons pub located nearby. To get there from the Penderel's Oak, when exiting onto the street turn left, then when walking past Holborn tube station turn left again down Kingsway, and after a short walk the pub will be found on the left-hand side.
