Don't forget to add a citation/ bibliographical reference and if adding media like a photo, don't forget to be sure it is yours or available for free to the public.

You can participate virtually on your own or with friends:

Your mission: Edit or add a sentence to at least one article or item to Wikipedia or Wiki Commons on a notable African Woman.

Once you have your Wikipedia user account and have registered to the Dashboard
Go to the AfroCROWD Tutorials page for a guided tour of Wikipedia with free videos on how to edit Wikipedia.
Then return to this page and browse our editing ideas section and choose your editing topic. Visible Women of Colors or Wiki Loves Women are great places to start for example.
Once you are done with your first edit, sounds off! Let us know via social media using the hashtag #WikiAfricaDay2019 on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram and sharing a pic or telling us about the person you wrote about.

Editing contribution types for new Wikipedia editors: edit

Is this your very first time? Try this:

Add a biographical sentence: Start with a name, a birthday, an occupation or title, what they famously did, and (very importantly) a citation to verify your information from a credible source(s).

===== How to make a citation (bibliographical reference) =====:

1) First, click on the pencil icon on the right to begin using "Visual Editor". Visual editor makes editing easier - like writing a school paper.

2) In Visual Editor, click on the area you want to add the citation. Then click cite. If you have a website as a source, add the website to the blank area.

If you do not have a website source, click manual and follow the prompts. Then click publish. If you have questions, ask a Wikimedia coach or go to Wikipedia:Tutorial/Citing sources.

3) Then click publish.

Afro Free Culture Crowdsourcing Wikimedia (AfroCROWD) is an outreach initiative and Wikimedia usergroup which seeks to increase awareness of the Wikimedia and free knowledge, culture, and software movements among potential editors of African descent. Since its launch during Black Wiki History Month in 2015, AfroCROWD has sensitized thousands in its target audience about free culture crowdsourcing and the need to close the multicultural and gender gaps in Wikipedia. AfroCROWD has also held monthly multilingual edit-a-thons in partnership with cultural institutions, galleries, libraries, archives, museums (GLAM) and many others.
