What problem does this solve? edit

A common issue for VisibleWikiWomen campaign organizers is to support their local communities in off line events, to add openly licensed photographs and illustrations of women that are missing of Wikipedia. This pattern can help you to focus your event not only on Wikipedia edits, but also on Wikimedia Commons uploads to improve the women biographies you will create.

What is the solution? edit

There are several actions that your editathons participants can take to increase women's visibility on Wikimedia projects. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Upload images of notable women and their work to Wikimedia Commons under the VisibleWikiWomen Category. Here is an Upload Wizard that can help, especially for those who have never uploaded images to Wikimedia Commons before.
  • Add images of women to existing Wikipedia articles.
  • Improve descriptions and categories for the women's images already gathered on Wikimedia Commons.
  • Build new content in other Wikimedia projects, like Wikidata, Wikisource, Wikicite and Wikipedia, using the new images.

Things to consider edit

What will you do during the editathon? edit

  • Search for images of notable women who are (or must be) on Wikipedia.
  • Select images that are in the public domain or have a free and open license.
  • Upload them to the #VisibleWikiWomen campaign.

What the participants need edit

  • A laptop (or can use their mobile phone too, but it's less convenient).
  • A user account on Wikipedia / Wikimedia Commons.
  • A work list with the names of the women who don't have an image on Wikipedia. You can previously create several Wikidata queries to have some lists of women from your local context, that hasn't images in their biographies yet. Take a look on this examples.

And don't forget... edit

  • Add the images to the VisibleWikiWomen category of the current year (for example: VisibleWikiWomen_2019 for 2019 campaign) , or use the upload wizard that do it for you.
  • Creative Commons licenses allowed: CC BY and CC BY-SA.
  • The image is usually in the public domain if the author of that creative work (the artist, photographer, etc) died more than 70 years ago.

Extra tips: edit

  • If you use Google Images refine your search results with this option : Tools > Usage rights > Labeled for reuse with modification
  • If you search on Flickr refine your results with: Commercial use and mods allowed
  • When you find a source with many free images, use it! Browse that image collection looking for other women who are missing on Wikipedia.
  • Do you need to upload many Flickr images at once? Do it with this useful tool: Flickr2Commons.
