Learning patterns/Conducting user experience research
What problem does this solve? edit
While Wikipedia's software is familiar to seasoned Wikipedians, often non-Wikipedians face major barriers to entry. The Art+Feminism team has had a difficult time streamlining our on and off-wiki presence. Hiring a User Experience consultant to conduct user interviews and report on their findings was incredibly useful to us in thinking through the problem of making it easier for new users to understand and participate in our project.
What is the solution? edit
Use grant funding to work with a User Experience Designer to help organize your online presence. As websites continue to proliferate, user experience is a growing field of work and study. While you can read up on the principles of user experience design, we found that working with an experienced UX designer was fundamental to the success of our project.
Things to consider edit
- Funding. If you want to work with a UX designer, you will need funding to hire them.
- Your goals. In order to work with a designer, you need to have a clear sense of how you want your project to improve, so that they can work with you towards those goals.
When to use edit
When you find yourself managing both on- and off-wiki presence and you're having trouble figuring out how to best reach your audience.

- In the Wikimedia grant-funded project to extend OpenRefine with Wikimedia Commons features, it was extremely valuable to get the help of an experienced UX designer. She conducted extensive user interviews, created wireframe designs for sometimes pretty complex new software features, and helped us prioritize the work in general.
