Karavali Wikimedians User Group invites you to a special field day as part of the Wiki Loves Folklore 2025 campaign. This event will focus on documenting live performances related to Tulu's solar calendar 11th month, Maayi, including the traditional Madira and Kanyapu performances.

Field Visits

The team visited two locations in Perla, Kasaragod District. The field documentation lasted from 12:00 noon to 11:00 PM on 27 february 2025, providing an extensive opportunity to capture performances and engage with the local artist community.

Community Engagement

  • More than 40-50 artists and community members participated in the event.
  • The Karavali Wikimedians team explained the importance of Wikimedia repositories, copyright licensing, and the role of Wikimedia Commons in preserving cultural heritage.

Field Day Achievements

  • Photographs: Over 200 photographs were captured, highlighting the performances and cultural settings.
  • Videos: A total of 3-5 videos were recorded to showcase the traditional Madira and Kanyapu performances dynamically.

One live performance recoding Two live performance recoding We had the privilege to immerse ourselves in the vibrant living heritage of cultural traditions in Perla, Kasaragod district. This incredible opportunity allowed us to document two live performances, including the Kanyapu, which had not been performed for the past 18 years. Witnessing this revival was truly remarkable. The performances of Maadiraa and Kanyapu were meticulously documented late into the evening, concluding around 11 PM.
15 People More than 50 villagers, performers and 03 Wikimedinas actively participated in the event. We had the privilege of witnessing a rare and nearly forgotten live performance, enriched by the active participation of women and children. The event featured over 20 talented artists, bringing the cultural tradition to life. Additionally, three dedicated Wikimedians were present, contributing to the documentation and preservation of this remarkable experience.
