Iranian Wikimedians User Group

The Iranian Wikimedians User Group is an independent group of Wikimedians, which is serving as the regional affiliate for Iran. We plan to use Wikimedia Iran as our main name and our would-be chapter. We are working on the chapter and hope to finish it within the next years.

Objectives and plans

1. Promotion of Wikimedia projects and free content in general. To encourage the use of Wikimedia resources in education (at cultural centers, associations and universities);
2. Outreach work in schools, universities and by social media to tell people about Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects;
3. Edit-a-thons to help Wikipedians/Wikimedians to enrich content;
4. Participation in different cultural events including Iran national books exhibition and more;
5. Photography trips and upload-a-thons to teach users how to upload images to Commons and how to use them;
6. Community support: monitoring of current activities and the development status of Iranian projects (including Persian, Mazandarani, Gilaki, Kurdish wikis); Wikipedia 10 Iran
7. Continuing work on Wikimedia Iran, although progress is slow.

2015

• Ran a successful fundraiser to create a unique font for the Persian Wikipedia and its sister projects (Reports: 1 , 2 , 3 , 4)
• Organizing monthly online Edit-a-thons on the Persian Wikipedia to improve collaborations among volunteers
• Outreach program: Start a Telegram channel to promote Wikipedia among readers

2016

• 500K article milestone ceremony in Tehran
• Participation and having presentation at SFD 2016 to represent WMF projects
• First nation-wide conference in Ahvaz

• Education Program at 2 universities
