Uncommon question about assigning a 'dead' account

Hello there, I'm a german Wikipedia user de:User:Onetwo / Stats. Recently I've stumbled upon the SUL feature, and got amazed by the idea immediately. I've tried to upgrade my account, but at the beginning of the merge process I realized that an account with the same name does already exist in the en-Wikipedia. And now I'm not sure if I registered that account in 12/05 and never used it, or if it wasn't me. I've registered my de-Wikipedia account in 04/06. I'd like to ask if it would be possible to rename that dead Onetwo account in the en-Wikipedia so that I could get registered in the en-Wikipedia with that name? I know, this is an unusual request, but if it is possible, what would be the next steps I should take? PS: I hope my request does not violate any en-Wikipedia law?

Hi, just go to w:en:Wikipedia:Changing username/Usurpations. Best --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 14:03, 16 February 2011 (UTC)

Unused SUL accounts

Stemming from a request at w:WP:CHUU, if you would like to "usurp" an SUL, would that be at all possible? In this case, the target username has no global contributions, however there is an SUL. Although stewards can delete SULs, I don't think that even under these circumstances it would happen, but I'm asking for further clarification. demize (talk) 22:02, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

From past experience, stewards will typically delete a global account if it has no attached accounts; thus a user seeking to vacate a global account would need to usurp all the attached accounts to have them detached from the SUL before making a request at m:SR/SUL. In future, a more streamlined process may be necessary. –xeno 16:02, 23 February 2011 (UTC)

Spelling Style ("..EN.wiki.."!)

Look: " Other advantages of this mechanism include the removal of the threat that impersonation poses and the ability to visit many projects without having to go through the labors of logging in everywhere." In my text-box the word "labors" is underlined red: I'm using a spell-checker targeted on the British spelling standard of English.

Do you perceive what I mean?

Delete accounts

Could I delete some accounts I don't use, please? --18:04, 9 March 2011 (UTC)

No, sorry. Accounts can not be deleted. Best regards, -- Dferg ☎ talk 18:37, 9 March 2011 (UTC)

Global user page/user talk page

Can we get a global user talk page (maybe a global user page, but the talk page is more important)? Normally, redirects between projects aren't allowed, but perhaps some sort of special thing could be put in place that would allow user talk pages to be redirected to a global user talk page? I can add soft redirect templates to a user talk page in a project or a language, but bots can't read so there's nothing that lets a bot know that I either won't or only rarely check messages in that project or language.
This can be problematic if a bot leaves a message like, "An image that you moved to the Commons was tagged with an "all rights released" template that used to be just fine (and still is on the English Wikipedia were it simply redirects to another template) but will be deleted here unless you change the template within the next 7 days." If the bot then goes and puts the warning label on the bottom of the image file, then it may be possible for an English Wikipedia admin who's deleting the image off the English Wikipedia to miss the warning message about impending deletion and delete the image. A few days later the image would be deleted off Commons, leaving the image possibly gone forever, simply because nobody got the message in time because there is no global user talk page or other global user messaging system. there have been requests about that in the past, it seems to depend on bug 4547, anyways this is something that has to be requested on bugzilla, and it probably already had been requested already or can be done by solving bug 4547... Best, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 19:02, 30 March 2011 (UTC)

ummm grr.

OK I don't even know what language this wiki is in.. polish maybe.. : http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedysta:Libertarianrule I created only the english account, and the other one has no edits. Help! 24.110.49.230 19:52, 30 March 2011 (UTC) OK WTF! I am logged out of my account.. wtf?!!?!?! Im libertarianrule here. OK didnt notice this is meta.wikimedia, not en.wikipedia. so logged in now. Libertarianrule 20:02, 30 March 2011 (UTC)

And? What is the problem? it is Your account! You have a SUL account, You have an account in every wmf-wiki therefore reserved, which is activated as soon as You visit that wiki... sulutil:Libertarianrule. If You don't want that, don't create an account on wmf-projects. --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 09:26, 2 April 2011 (UTC)

Wording

The other day I was aked by a newbie what "Log me on globally" meant. I explained it to them, but the wording could be improved. Wat is wrong with "Log me on across Wikimedia projects" or some similar phrasing to make it clear what you are doing. —Tom Morris (talk) 18:35, 3 April 2011 (UTC)

Log me in globally

As I understand it and the Help:Unified login page is not clear on this point, checking the "Log me in globally" option does not log you in globally. It merely gives you the ability to log in to any wiki site of the Wikimedia Foundation without creating a new account. You still have to separately log into each editable online resource community, but can do so using the same user password and user ID. My own experience is that I am not logged in globally after logging into en.wikipedia.org. In fact, I just had to log into wikimedia.org to make this post even thought I am logged in at en.wikipedia.org. And yes, I have correctly gone through all the steps to have a Unified login. So the question is, is this edit correct and, if so, please post what browser settings additional need to be in place to be automatically logged into each editable online resource community merely by logging into one editable online resource community (such as en.wikipedia.org). -- Uzma Gamal 12:02, 26 March 2011 (UTC)

For me, I have to log into each project manually, but am automatically logged into all language versions of said project by checking that box. sonia 22:31, 27 March 2011 (UTC)

Helo, no this edit is not correct. What browser settings You need I don't know, but I did not really change them and use the standard ones, the cookies have to be allowed plus javascript. There are some wmf-sites that are not included in the automatic login, but they are not meta nor commons nor other language ones of the common standard projects. not included are for example incubator, outreach.wikimedia.org, strategy.wikimedia.org, usability.wikimedia.org, wikimania-sites, labs, ...
The checkbox log me in globally and remember me should do it, if they don't You have a browser that "forgets" You. I am using firefox btw. but sometimes opera and opera mobile and these work perfectly with the default settings and the checked checkboxes.
Best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 18:03, 30 March 2011 (UTC)
uk.wikimedia.org is one which I always have to log into manually. —Tom Morris (talk) 18:33, 3 April 2011 (UTC)
The local chapters are also not part of automatic login, therefore "...", as there are some more, but any language version of the standard projects "wikipedia", "wiktionary", "wikibooks", "wikisource", "wikiversity", "wikiquote" also "commons" and "meta" should work! If they don't it is a browser problem. --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 16:58, 4 April 2011 (UTC)

Hi. On login pages, like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:UserLogin, there is a tickbox labelled "Also log me in to other wikis of the Wikimedia Foundation". I think there should be a link labelled something like "(what's this?)" linking to https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Unified_login or similar. This is because, before I setup my unified account, even though that tickbox was ticked I was wondering why it wasn't working. It wasn't until I searched a little that I came across this whole unified login thing. I expect there will be many other users in the same situation, wondering what that tickbox is about. --Pelago 21:19, 22 October 2011 (UTC)

CSS/JS and Signature cascading as part of Unified Login

Is there any way to automatically cascade the CSS or JS (either skin-specific or common) and/or the user's signature to all Wikimedia sites on which the Unified Login takes effect? Currently I have to manually cascade my Vector-skin-specific CSS from English Wikipedia to other sites like Wikipedia in other languages, Wiktionary and Wikiquote by using CSS import rules (JS has similar import rules). I can have a centralized CSS which is cascaded, but for every new site that I login through the Unified Login system, I have to manually add the import line. As for signatures, I have to manually copy it over, and cascading it is currently impossible. -- ADTC Talk Ctrb . 09:30, 27 November 2011 (UTC)

What you want is global preferences. Best, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 19:59, 28 November 2011 (UTC)

Option of only loging into a single account has disappeared

Forgive me if I ask this in the wrong place. Since I unified my accounts last year, I have continued to opt (by checking the box) to signing in only to the account I needed on that day. In fact I regretted unifying my accounts and wish it was reversible. Now today something is different from last week on the login page... I no longer have the option to log into only the one page. I can only assume this means the default login IS a multiple login, unless some hidden decision was attained somewhere else that I've been unable to find? Can someone here clarify this for me or tell me where to find the answer?--Tallard 06:00, 28 December 2011 (UTC)

You are right. I can not see the box either. The box was added as a wanted feature and I have no idea why it has disappeared. I may raise the question in bugzilla: if you want to, and request to have it enabled again. Thanks. —Marco Aurelio (Nihil Prius Fide) 08:51, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
