{{MediaWiki:}} and {{int:}}

edit

Just as clarification, {{MediaWiki:..}} and {{int:..}} are not the same.

{{MediaWiki:..}} is not a magic word function. It is just a regular template transclusion from the MediaWiki-namespace (just like one could embed User:Krinkle/Tools with {{User:Krinkle/Tools}}.

{{int:..}} on the other hand is in fact a magic word function that returns the translated message value for the passed key, in the language of the logged-in user. For example {{int:nstab-main}} returns "Content page" (the title of the "namespace tab" of the main namespace).

These messages are part of the MediaWiki software, they are not stored in the MediaWiki namespace. Only messages that are overridden or created for this wiki specifically (created, for example: MediaWiki:Common.js. Overridden for example: MediaWiki:Blockedtext (original) are stored on-wiki in that namespace. Another big difference is the translation. {{int:nstab-main}} returns "Content page" for English users but returns "Seite" for German users. –Krinkletalk 12:30, 16 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

anchorencode?

edit

Searching for "anchorencode" redirects me to this help page, but there isn't any information about anchorencode. So, what does it do?? Please, if you answer, also notify me on my Wikipedia talk page since I'm not so often here. —Kri 22:03, 2 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

This has been merged to the MediaWiki software documentation at mw:Help:Magic_words#Parser functions (see notice on top of the help page). –Krinkletalk 01:36, 3 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I edited the redirection page so now it links to mw:Help:Magic_words#Parser functions instead, although the reader has to manually click on a link to be forwarded to the page since it is at another Wikimedia site. —Kri 09:52, 3 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

GENDER

edit

There used to be a GENDER magic word, but I'm not seeing it documented. Is it still in the software? NE Ent (talk) 12:50, 1 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

I just came here looking for information on the {{GENDER}} magic word, but it's not documented! It appears that NE Ent beat me to this talk page, though. Would anybody be able to document this? – voidxor (talk | contrib) 01:25, 30 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
It's actually at mw:Help:Magic words NE Ent (talk) 20:44, 11 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

What's left to kill this page?

edit

It seems crazy to have this page stumbling along while mw:Help:Magic words on mediawiki.org is more up-to-date.

However, only this page documents the Template modifiers

  • {{msgnw}}
  • {{raw}}

and maybe other stuff. If we move those to mw.org, can we {{Outdated}} this? -- SPage (WMF) (talk) 23:47, 20 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

I copied Template modifiers to mw:Help:Magic words#Transclusion modifiers. It is missing safesubst here, but better to kill this page than fix it. -- SPage (WMF) (talk) 09:42, 21 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
"XML-style tags" like <nowiki> and <ref> are mentioned here as magic words while they are not on the Mediawiki page. One could also call them "HTML-style tags", I presume, since both HTML and XML tags are recognizable by the "<" and ">" symbols.
It is surprisingly hard to find a page covering this topic. One would assume that the existence of non-html tags which are part of normal wiki markup would be described on the main page about wiki markup. But mw:Help:Editing, mw:Help:Contents and mw:Help:Formatting do not mention them (except for 'nowiki' in the latter). On the other hand, mw:Manual:Tag extensions is only useful for developers, not for users. And Help:XML-style tags is hard to find, were it not for this page...
I do not know if these tags should be considered magic words, but at least the information should be findable. Also there is a difference between mw:Manual:Tag extensions and en:Help:HTML in wikitext#Parser and extension tags because the latter differentiates between 'parser tags' (like nowiki and pre, available in alle Mediawiki versions by default) and 'extension tags' (like ref and math, only available through extensions). The MediaWiki page lumps them together. Bever (talk) 22:47, 10 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
I'm not familiar with the process of deprecating these pages over to Mediawiki help pages, but there are still wikis out there that link to these help pages and as an end-user of these pages being able to easily find the right resource is paramount. With that in mind I added a link to Behavior switches in the Mediawiki page since I had a hard time finding resources pages on that topic. I didn't even know what they were called until today (and will likely forget again in the future). It was the intro to this page that helped me find the name of the topic I was looking for. --Stux (talk) 17:45, 11 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
