Hello Haylad, thanks for submitting this Rapid Fund request. We have reviewed this grant application with the international organizing team of the AfroCine contest and we are reaching out to you with the following requests and comments:

  • You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages where you have informed the relevant communities about your proposed work in advance. Please add these links under question #2. Please reach out to all Nigerian communities to let them know about this grant request.
  • Please specify the grant end date.

Budget:

  • How many people would need internet subscription during the project and how much will be allocated to each person?
  • The cost of airtime seems too high. We would like to understand why you need costs to cover airtime if you are offering internet to team members. Can’t you communicate using the online channels?
  • Administration and Facilitation of online Trainings: $250 - we won’t fund any administration and facilitation costs for this event. Please remove this amount from your budget.
  • Branding and Social media promotion: $350 - please remove all branding expenses and use the branding materials that will be prepared by the international team. For the social media promotion we will fund 150 USD maximum.
  • The prize budget seems too high. We won’t fund 750 USD for the prizes of this local contest. Please reduce the total prize budget to 250 USD. The first prize should be capped at around 100 USD.

Please make all requested changes and update the total requested budget accordingly. Looking forward to hearing from you. Best regards, DSaroyan (WMF) (talk) 11:30, 28 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi DSaroyan (WMF),
  • The Wiki pages have been linked.
  • The Participants, Team Members and Trainers will be needing an internet subscription. Currently, we have recruited 32 persons to participate in the contest, this is excluding some of the Participants that participated last year. We plan to recruit 40 more persons to participate. I have shared the google form of the recruited participants to your mail. We can't adequately determine how much will be allocated to each person as we don't know the number of participants we would recruit. We are budgeting $10/per active participant. (Deduced from our previous experience)
  • The cost of airtime is high because during the contest we plan on calling the registered participant to discuss the difficulties they might be encountering during the contest as it relates to the creation of articles, the Nigerian language Wikipedia they will be contributing to. etc. Some participants are older, here in Nigeria, Some older folks don't find it appropriate to call via online channels. I have reduced the cost of airtime to $200.
  • The essence of this contest is to encourage and recruit new Nigerian Wikipedians and existing ones to contribute to the Nigerian Language Wikipedia. We plan on organising multiple training sessions on the three Nigerian Language Wikipedias at different times. This will require 3 different persons to subscribe to an online platform, we will be recording the sessions and be refunding the internet used by the participants to access these training. This was our approach last year and we believe we can improve on it this year. The facilitation and administration of online training is an important part of this contest. I will advise we don't remove the funding attached to it.
  • The branding materials provided by the International team is insufficient as it doesn't fully align with that of the Nigerian team, they are not offering virtual training sessions we plan to do so. To announce these sessions we would use different materials which the international team will not provide. The number of people we can reach and train locally cannot be compared to the number of people the international team will reach in the Nigerian context. It is more difficult to host internet-based training in Nigeria than physical training. We also plan on making Swags such as Shirts for the facilitators and trainers, this is to depict excellence and reward the Trainers in the process. I have reduced the cost of branding and social media promotions to $250.
  • I have reduced the cost of prizes to $400, [last year] we spent over $500 on prizes and delivery of prizes. I believe reducing the total prizes to 250 USD will affect the quality of the contributions this year.

It is important I also point out that the value of the Nigerian Naira has reduced drastically from what it was last year, the cost of communication and branding has increased from what it was last year. we are spending so much because of the bad state of the Nigerian Naira. I have reduced the total cost to $1700. Haylad (talk) 13:32, 28 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
