Grants talk:Project/Rapid/Steve Kally/Photowalk in Nok, Zangon Kataf, Kafanchan, Kagoro and Godogodo

Comments from DSaroyan (WMF) edit

Hi Steve Kally, thank you for submitting your grant application. I have some questions to learn more about the grant proposal and planned activities.

  • What specific objects do you plan to photograph and why?
  • Please provide a list of objects you plan to photograph and corresponding articles on Wikimedia projects. This shouldn't be a complete list.
  • How have you made sure that these images are missing from Wikimedia projects?
  • Why do they want to travel with a group of 6 photographers? What's the need behind having 6 people in the team?
  • What is the timeline of the project? Have you considered any potential risks when planning the project? How will you mitigate them?
  • Only one of your team members has experience on Wikimedia Commons. We will only move forward with this project if you demonstrate that most of the team members have experience on Wikimedia Commons and are well aware of related policies.
  • How will you make sure that the quality of these 1,600 images are aligned with the Wikimedia Commons requirements in terms of quality and searchability?
  • How have you involved other community members in this proposal? Have you discussed it with them before submitting this project?

Looking forward to hearing from you soon. Thanks for your time, DSaroyan (WMF) (talk) 13:26, 29 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Response to questions raised by DSaroyan edit

Hello DSaroyan (WMF) below are responses (in order to which the question were asked) to the issues you raised concerning my proposal for my Wikimedia commons project on Photowalk in Nok, Zagon Kataf, Kafanchan, Kagoro and Godogodo:

  • The "specific objects" that will be taken will include Historical caves in Gworok(Kagoro) Mountains, Sacred trees like a̱kum mabata̱do, Ninkyop Sacred trees in Kafanchan, Sacred stone sites in Dutsen Gaya around the Nok axis and so much more.

Also, Legendary figures/landmarks like the Katagwan giant foot print on the Gworok(Kagoro) mountains, Katagwan's giant tomb/gravesite, Gundong (the first chief of Gworok) gravesite will be captured.

  • Here are some other objects (with the ones listed above) we intend to take and their corresponding articles:

- Artificial landmarks like the Statue of Gwamna Awan at Agban Round about in Kagoro which will help develop articles on Kagoro Kagoro, Kaduna state, and Atyap people.

- One of the oldest tin and other mining tunnels in Central Nigeria where forced labour was imosed on some of the population of Southern Kaduna during the British Colonial regime, especially during world war (1914-1918), this is located in Godogodo and will help develop articles on Godogodo, Jema'a and Kaduna state

- Mass gravesite of victims of the Southern Kaduna massacres in Gworok and Southern Kaduna between 2020-2022. This will help develop articles on Zagon Kataf, Kagoro and Kaduna state

- The old Arab bank (Non functional) in Gworok this will help to develop the article on Kagoro.

- The old Colonial Bank in Godogodo building (non functional), This will help develop articles on Godogodo, Jema'a Local Government area and Kaduna state.

- Old Colonial wells that will be helpful to articles on Jema'a, Kagoro , Godogodo and more.

- River confluence in Godogodo, this will be relevant for the article on Godogodo

  • I became sure these images are "missing on Wikimedia projects" after my team and I took a week to search through Wikicommons and so many articles relating to these areas and didn't find images, this informed and motivated the need for this Photowalk.
  • The team will consist of five (5) photographers as indicated in the proposal see here and not six photographers as you stated.

Having these number of photographers will hasten the pace of the coverage of the sites within the time needed, thus bringing about timely progress for the photo upload on Wikimedia commons. Also, the team needs consideration because most of the team members are workers and students and need more hands to complete the job on time.

  • The timeline of the project spans within 15 days as already indicated on the project proposal page, see here. The tour will be holding mainly during the three weekends in these 15 days.

We have also considered the "potential risks" involved in this project which are:

- Possible violation/trespass on cultural norms: this is the risk to impermissibly get into sites that people hold high traditions to, but we intend to engage community heads that will give us guides to avoid (impermissible) trespass and possible clearance. These guides were captured in my budget see here to be given stipends.

- Another potential risk is insecurity, but the team will limit its tours on safe areas only.

  • The team initially had only "one member" experienced in Wiki commons, but currently all of the team members have been trained on Wiki commons last week and had made considerable and satisfactory input as can be ascertained in their individual contributions.
  • We would make use of computer graphic packages like MS paint to ensure that images not carrying the right extensions (like .jpg or .jpeg) are converted to the right extensions needed on Wikimedia commons.

The images would also be those solely taken by our team and not those involving violation of copyright laws. Also, only high quality images will be carefully selected and uploaded.

  • I have notified/discussed this project with other community members from Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo Wikimedia User groups about the events, though this was done after the submission of this project. Below are the links to the notification messages in their various discussion pages:

-Yoruba Wikimedians User Group

-Igbo Wikimedians User Group

-Hausa Wikimedians User Group

I have also discussed with members of our proposed Tyap Wikimedia user group and laid more emphasis for the other four members of the team I want to travel with.

Thank you, as I await your kind consideration. Steve Kally (talk) 03:51, 9 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
