Hi Krishna Chaitanya Velaga, thanks for your proposal for this series of edit-a-thons and activities involving two educational institutions. Here are my comments:

  • Thanks for letting us know what resources you have; It's great to hear that you are able to use the venue free of charge and that you are able to reuse posters from prior event.
  • In terms of the plans around forming the User Group, what will be happening during this event to support starting the user group? Will you be letting students know about these plans, and how they can involve themselves once the group is recognized? Also, please be sure to review the eligibility requirements and How to apply.
  • Can you describe more about the process you'll use to review students ability to contribute during Week 1?

@I JethroBT (WMF): Greetings, thanks for the support. Coming to your questions,
  • During the event Suyash Dwivedi, one of the founding members of Hindi Wikimedia User Group will mentor a session on formation of a User group (challenges and requirements)
  • Yes, the students will be notified about the user group
  • Once the group is recognized, we will have regular meet ups and also conduct various activities including Edit-a-thons, Training sessions at colleges in and around the nearby to attract the student community.
  • As far the requirements are concerned:
S.No Requirement Comment(s)
1 Minimum active Wikimedia editors, 3 We already have three editors who recently started contributing
2 Suggested minimum members, 10 Once the edit-a-thon is done, this can be reached with ease
3 Focus Advances Wikimedia movement
4 Mission aligned with Wikimedia Foundation Yes
5 Compliance with naming guidelines and trademark policy Naming is done, the name is per the guidelines. Logo in under work, which will also be per the guidelines
6 Information about group published on a Wikimedia wiki VIVA-VVIT Wikimedia User Group, basic pages created
7 Plans for activities or efforts to advance Wikimedia projects Yes, plans to conduct various workshops and events targeting the educational community and any mission aligned programs withing the geographical reach
8 Allows new members Yes, of course. Wikipedia is open to edit, and so is the group
9 Two designated contacts for Wikimedia Foundation Yes
This explains the fulfillment of requirements.
  • Regarding the reviewing the students' ability, we'll ask them write some facts about a subject of their knowledge (disclaimer will given on NPOV). So we will assess accordingly. Looking forward for suggestions from you.

@Krishna Chaitanya Velaga: Hi Krishna, thanks for your responses. I'll be approving this request shortly. In terms of how to assess student readiness, here are a couple of considerations:
  • Think about what options students have for doing work on-wiki. Some tasks, like revising an existing article, adding references, and copyediting, are generally easier than writing a complete article from scratch. Students who may not be prepared to write a lot of prose or summarize information from sources may be able to do something else.
  • Ask what your students want to do, and let them know what minimum expectations you have for that task.
  • This learning pattern on evaluating student work also provides some guidance on what to look for when reviewing students' efforts at contributing.
