Comments from WMF
editHello, GiFontenelle; thank you again for your submission. We have the following questions and comments for you:
- You mention that you have experience hosting editathons on topics such as neuroscience and gender. Can you please provide dashboard links, or other information links, regarding such editathons?
- What are your strategies to deal with gender-related issues (like potential takedowns) throughout the editathons?
- We notice that one of the editatonas you propose is related to a museum. Have you explored the idea of having the museum provide a space for the event?
Regards, MMontes (WMF) (talk) 00:52, 11 May 2019 (UTC)
- @MMontes (WMF): Thanks for your questions, which I am happy to address below.
- An exhaustive list is available at the list of edit-a-thons, w:pt:Wikipédia:Edit-a-thon/Atividades em português, which were basically led by myself and friends. I have highlighted some key events I have contributed to leading:
- I don't understand what you mean by takedown. What we normally do is to address gender-related issues during an short presentation at the event. You can see me leading this kind of presentation in pictures on images above. Gender-related events are normally co-organized with feminist groups, such as PrograMaria and Frente Feminista Casperiana Lisandra.
- I was a Wikimedian in residence in this particular museum --by the way in the context of one of the most successful [1]. The building of this museum is currently closed, due to risks of collapsing. So, unfortunately, it is impossible to have the museum provide a space for the event,
- Let me know if you have further questions. --GiFontenelle (talk) 19:03, 13 May 2019 (UTC)
Further comments from WMF
editThank you for your responses, GiFontenelle. A follow-up: by takedown I meant the risk of having new articles about notable women, for example, deleted once editatona participants submit them -- which is a problem that gender-based initiatives have had in the past. How will you work to address issues like this so that editatona participants don't get discouraged? Thank you, MMontes (WMF) (talk) 19:51, 13 May 2019 (UTC)
- @MMontes (WMF): Thanks for the clarification. Content deletion on gender-basis is a real issue. It is something we have been addressing in Brazil very publicly in our events (on-wiki and off-wiki) and with partners [2], within a general scope of discussing power dynamics and decolonization processes in Wikimedia projects. In specific edit-a-thons, the best practice is to inform the community and ask for help --which we will do for instance on the Village Pump-- and have good practices of tutoring during the events. Two members of the group of volunteers I work with are admins at the Outreach Dashboard and monitor deletion requests associated to programs and events, and of course they will be acting for events I am requesting support for. I hope this addresses your concerns. --GiFontenelle (talk) 20:35, 13 May 2019 (UTC)
