Grant application received edit

Hello, fouadas; thank you for submitting this grant request. Please keep an eye on this talk page as we will post comments and questions to address during the review process. MMontes (WMF) (talk) 21:30, 6 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Comments from WMF edit

We are excited to read about the Art on Our Mind research project, as well as to see more initiatives to address the gender gap in Wiki projects from an intersectional perspective. We have the following comments and questions:

Questions
  1. We see that you are including the cost of two banners and posters. Can you please provide details of how they will be used? Are there any more environmentally sustainable ways to meet the goals for the posters and banners?
Thanks for your comment, we have a policy environmental friendly policy at 'Art on our Mind'. We will re-use the posters on campus, but will think of other more environmental friendly ways instead of banners. Fouadas (talk) 06:33, 7 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thank you! MMontes (WMF) (talk) 15:04, 7 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
  1. Who will be the speaker traveling to speak at Afems? Can you please link their username?
We have invited Isla Haddow-Flood (user:Islahaddow) to speak at Afems. Fouadas (talk) 06:33, 7 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thank you! MMontes (WMF) (talk) 15:04, 7 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
  1. Can you please provide more details about the transport item in the budget?
We want to invite a group of young creatives from Katlehong to join the workshops. We met at the Wikipedia round table at Keleketla! library in December. The budget includes taxi fare for four persons from their homes to Spetlele taxi rank (R10 each), then from Spetlele to Bree Street taxi rank (R20 each), so it's R60 return. It's minibus transport so they won't come with receipts, however I shall keep attendance sheets. Fouadas (talk) 06:33, 7 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thank you! Please look in advance at the reporting requirements for expenses like this so that you can gather the relevant documents.MMontes (WMF) (talk) 15:04, 7 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the reminder, will do that for sure.Fouadas (talk) 15:24, 7 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
  1. Bobby Shabangu (Bobbyshabangu) and Dumisani Ndubane (Thuvack) are listed as experienced Wikimedians who will be supporting this initiative. Given that we are talking about 12 workshops, are there other Wikimedians that are willing to take part in order to better distribute labor?
We are in contact with the Wikimedia ZA board and continue to look for Wikipedians in Joburg to facilitate sessions. At the same time, we've started out running self-taught skill building workshops and aim to invite experts for some sessions to tell us details about relevant processes, such as OTRS, or how prepare and upload oral sources (e.g. interviews, panel discussions) to Wikimedia.

  1. Unfortunately, there are some items listed in your budget that cannot be funded through Rapid Grants. One of them is the honorarium for the speaker; WMF funds cannot be used to give cash honoraria or pay for people's time. This item can instead become a meal for the speaker, but bear in mind that a receipt will be requested.
    Thanks, noted. Fouadas (talk) 06:33, 7 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
  1. Another item that we are not currently funding is the T-shirts for 20 individuals. We only allow funds to be used for T-shirts for recurring volunteers who will wear the T-shirt repeatedly (say 5 T-shirts for a grant of this type). We encourage grantees to think of more environmentally sustainable and inclusive ways to thank volunteers for their time.
    Thanks, noted. Fouadas (talk) 06:33, 7 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
  1. If we approve your grant, bear in mind that we can only fund expenses that take place within the project dates. If you need to adjust the dates you originally submitted, now is a good time to do so.
    Thanks, noted. Fouadas (talk) 06:33, 7 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
  1. Given that editing on gender-based topics on Wiki projects faces a unique set of challenges, we want to ensure that the workshops move forward only once there are Wikimedians who have experience in dealing with these challenges. We therefore request Bobby Shabangu (Bobbyshabangu), Dumisani Ndubane and other Wikimedians involved in this project to chime in on this talk page to describe their experience with editing and facilitation of gender-based topics on Wiki projects.
Thanks for your comment. Most the people in our workshops (students and lecturers) are working on intersectional issues around race/class/gender/etc. in a professional capacity. So, we're be keen to hear from other facilitators about their experiences. Fouadas (talk) 06:33, 7 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
On this point, I think it is important to state openly that we request that initiatives aimed at gender-based topics also involve Wikimedians who have experience with this set of considerations on Wiki projects. On top of the theoretical and practical issues in gender-based initiatives of any type, there are technical challenges related to Wiki projects (around notability; adequate collection of sources of women, femme and gender non-conforming individuals that have been marginalized from literature; workflows before article publication to ensure that if articles get taken down by the Wiki community not all content is lost and cases can be appropriately disputed, et cetera). We understand that Islahaddow can provide guidance on some of these issues, but we need you to involve other Wikimedians with these experience. MMontes (WMF) (talk) 15:04, 7 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for elaborating your point, now I get what you mean. Yes, that's an important issue to consider and thanks for pointing it out. I've sent a request to the Wikimedia ZA board to find facilitators. And I've discussed at Wikimania in Cape town with other editors that mutual support is relevant increasing Women-of-colour presence and I hope to continue to stay in contact and exchange with them. Again, appreciate that you point out the political dimension of the archive when working with 2SLGBTQ+ people.Fouadas (talk) 15:24, 7 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
For future grant proposals
  1. Finally, we notice the part of your grant proposal that mentions your intention to apply for a grant to buy equipment for the initiative. On this, two notes: WMF only grants funds for equipment to Wikimedia-affiliated user groups. Also, the scope of what you currently present fits within the Rapid Grant guidelines; for subsequent support once this grant is completed, we recommend you consider the Project Grants program.
Thanks for your comment, yes, we're in a skills-building phase, however we aim to grow as a group of continuing Wikipedia editors and to form a Wikimedia-affiliated group in the future.Fouadas (talk) 06:33, 7 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Looking forward to your responses. Regards, MMontes (WMF) (talk) 21:30, 6 June 2019 (UTC) Left in-line responses. MMontes (WMF) (talk) 15:04, 7 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your comments and feedback, responded to your second sets of questions and comments.Fouadas (talk) 15:24, 7 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Grant request approved edit

Hello, fouadas; thank you for addressing my questions and comments. I left in-line comments to your responses, but I wanted to especially highlight our requirement to involve more Wikimedians working on gender-based issues on Wiki projects, on top of the topic experts you are already bringing in.

We are approving this grant request and we are looking forward to reading the outcomes of this research project. Much success! MMontes (WMF) (talk) 15:15, 7 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Grant mid-term review edit

Towards the end of the academic term at the University of the Witwatersrand, the Wikipedia volunteers from the research team met to discuss the remaining six month of Wikimedia Rapid Grant funding. Most of the volunteers and bursary students graduated and left the team and we remain a small group of editors. We discussed that working with few volunteers we need to collaborate with other organisations and projects to continue to build the network of editors. We aim to collaborate each month with one organisation, organising a Wikipedia workshop or Edit-a-thon.

In January, Griffinbridge reached out about running a Wikipedia Workshop at Bridge Books in Johannesburg, featuring South African women writers. We decided to contact Art+Feminism editor Elena Patrise to collaborate and organised an Edit-a-thon at Bridge Books on 26 Feburary. The outreach dashboard https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/courses/Bridge_Books/ArtAndFeminism2020_(February_2020)/home was created and we will continue to meet with the group regularly for Edit-a-thons.

In February, the team attended an oral histories workshop (Wednesday, 5 February from 9-1pm in Seminar Room 207, 2nd floor, Robert Sobukwe Block) at the University of the Witwatersrand, and we use this knowledge to continue working with oral recordings as references.

On 5 March 2020, we will begin a new collaboration with Phototool, aiming to add entries on non-formal photography education institutions in different African countries: https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/courses/Phototool/Phototool_Wikipedia_Workshops_(March_2020)
