Not funded edit

Hello James Moore200,

Thank you for submitting your grant application. We appreciate your interest in contributing to the mission of the Wikimedia Movement. We are continuously strengthening our grants review process, ensuring that grant funding is being invested towards impactful projects and efforts geared towards contributing to the mission of Wikimedia Movement in the most efficient and effective manner.

After a thorough review of your application, we have decided to not fund your Rapid Fund request. Here are the main reasons for our decision:

  • The project plan is unclear. You mentioned that this would be a global editathon. However, most of the activities are taking place in Nigeria. Moreover, there are some discrepancies regarding the global engagement.
  • While the metrics past is clear, we think that the learning and evaluation responses are vague.
  • If this will be a global editathon or campaign, it should include a tentative plan of global activities. Additionally, there should be a global community engagement. It seems that no community has been notified. As mentioned in the grant application, for Wikimedians for Sustainable Development, the notification has been done only for 'core leaders'.
  • We think that the proposed budget is unclear. The mentioned expenses seem high. The budget is not aligned with the activities.
  • The mentioned paid role details are unclear. You have also requested a paid role for the same person in terms of another global project.
  • Additionally, you requested payment for '4 months of planning and coordination since May 2022'. We cannot fund activities, including paid roles, retroactively.
  • Your response to question 9 is also unclear. You should describe the way you will follow up with participants/local organizers and not how other local organizers will follow up with their participants.

If you decide to resubmit the application for the next round, please make sure to address all described concerns. Best regards, DSaroyan (WMF) (talk) 12:44, 9 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

Not funded for new updated proposal edit

Hello James Moore200, thank you again for your work on the application. We have reviewed the new updates to the grant application and we'd like to present the initial concerns with updates. See my new comments in italic.

  • The project plan is unclear. You mentioned that this would be a global editathon. However, most of the activities are taking place in Nigeria. Moreover, there are some discrepancies regarding the global engagement. - Still not addressed. As mentioned, the project seems to be for local engagement. Global engagement part is not clear.
  • While the metrics past is clear, we think that the learning and evaluation responses are vague. - Not addressed. The response to the learning question is still vague.
  • If this will be a global editathon or campaign, it should include a tentative plan of global activities. Additionally, there should be a global community engagement. - Not addressed
  • It seems that no community has been notified. As mentioned in the grant application, for Wikimedians for Sustainable Development, the notification has been done only for 'core leaders'. - Somehow addressed, but there is no meaningful engagement or endorsements from any community members.
  • We think that the proposed budget is unclear. The mentioned expenses seem high. The budget is not aligned with the activities. - Mostly addressed but not the paid role part.
  • The mentioned paid role details are unclear. You have also requested a paid role for the same person in terms of another global project. - Not addressed (see my comments for the next point)
  • Additionally, you requested payment for '4 months of planning and coordination since May 2022'. We cannot fund activities, including paid roles, retroactively. - Addressed but there are new concerns. You have just updated the timeline of the reimbursement. You now request the same payment just for 5 weeks, while initially you requested this reimbursement for 4 months. It is concerning, also given that:
    • There is no clarity in the responsibilities and needs for having such a role. Though requested, you haven't provided any detailed description for the paid role.
    • There was no transparency in the role selection process.
    • You are reimbursed in terms of another project too as a global coordinator with a similar timeline.
    • The rates and compensation amounts seem arbitrary.
  • Your response to question 9 is also unclear. You should describe the way you will follow up with participants/local organizers and not how other local organizers will follow up with their participants. - Mostly addressed

Considering the above mentioned points, we decided to not fund this grant request. Thank you for your time and apologies for any inconvenience caused.
