Grants talk:PEG/User:Ahmed Mohi El din- Egypt Wikimedians user group/Wikimedia projects activities in Egypt/Report

Thanks so much for providing a detailed report! It's great to see so much engagement by the user group. We have a few questions regarding the report and look forward to your responses.

  1. We appreciate your reflections on what went well and what was challenging. We'd like to hear a bit more about the local partners you've made for future collaborations and the organizations that are interested in hosting editathons with the group. Do you already have concrete plans to work with these partners/organizations? What types of organizations are they?
  1. Like many groups, we understand there is the persistent challenge of finding more offline volunteers that can help manage activities. You've done a great job engaging new users through editathons, photo competitions, and the education program. Have you thought about new strategies for continued engagement of these folks? What type of follow-up are you doing with people that come to editathons or participate in WLM? Can you identify students with leadership potential who might want to take a more active role? We can discuss this more in Berlin!
  • We register their names and usernames on google docs to track their participation in the future and follow up with them when we have similar events , but unfortunately , I failed to get the Visa for Berlin , so I am will not be able to attend the conference . --Mohamed Ouda (talk) 16:09, 7 May 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  1. Regarding WLM, it looks like you had many more photos than expected! We're curious to know more about the photography editing workshop. What was the workshop focused on -- photography skills, editing/uploading? How many participants did you have? If you created any materials for this event, can you please link to them? What is your assessment of the value of the event? We are encouraging other groups to hold this type of activity alongside photo competitions so it would be great to hear if you think it had a lot of value. It looks like so far, 2.2% of the photos from WLM 2014 have been used on Wikimedia projects. We would recommend in future, holding a post-competition editathon to get volunteers to write/improve articles about monuments and add photos.

the users who attended the photography editing workshop are 7 , and it was focused about uploading, and yes we created materials for this event and here poster we created , and this event value was little if it compared with the photography outings that we did . as the photography outings results much more photos . anss sure we will consider using those photos in the future in Wikimedia projects --Mohamed Ouda (talk) 16:58, 8 May 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  1. Regarding the editathons, 50 participants per event seems like a lot! How many experienced Wikimedians did you have at these events to help facilitate and answer questions? Have you been tracking participant's after the event to see if they are continuing to edit? What we've found is that one-off editathons don't seem to have as much impact in terms of content creation/editor retention as a series of editing workshops where participants come repeatedly to events over a period to learn progressively more advanced editing skills. This might be an approach to consider in the future. If you have event pages for the editathons with the username lists/article lists, that would be great to link as well.
  • We usually have Have 4 experienced Wikimedians in the editathons , and yes we track the participant after the events and sure we will consider the info in the future . and I shared the sheet whice contains the usernames with you --Mohamed Ouda (talk) 16:29, 7 May 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  1. We assume that providing the equipment support for the WEP is an ongoing activity, can you please confirm? Also, please be sure to have an equipment tracking page for the user group if you don't already. Here is an example: Equipment Logbook.

yes I created Wikimedia_Egypt Logbook --Mohamed Ouda (talk) 16:58, 8 May 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  1. Thanks for providing such detail in the expense documentation. In future, it would be helpful if the receipts were labeled clearly so we can understand what they are for.

Sure we will consider that in future .--Mohamed Ouda (talk) 16:29, 7 May 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  1. Can you let us know why the Old Cairo meetup was so much more expensive than the other meetups ($232 vs. $11-60)?

there was 13 member in the Old Cairo meetup , and the prices in the area are bit higher because it is touristic area --Mohamed Ouda (talk) 16:29, 7 May 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  1. There is $2,172.47 in remaining funds. The group currently has an open grant request for $999. This means there is still $1,173.47 remaining. Please let us know if you will be planning activities in the near future or if you plan to return the funds to WMF.

yes there is also the writing context which we did and its prizes are $400 --Mohamed Ouda (talk) 17:05, 8 May 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi Mohamed Ouda. Thank you for the responses. In terms of the writing contest, since it is a part of this grant, please include it in the report. We'd like to know what the results were, the exact spending in the expense report and any additional expenses documentation. Once we have this information we can move forward with approval and the new request. This would also mean that there is $1,772.47 remaining on this grants. Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 03:19, 21 May 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi Alex , the exact spending on this contest . was $400 , for the first winner %250 and $100 for the second winner . but they didn't receive the prizes yet as we are planning to receive it on the celebration conference , and here is the contest page on Arabic Wikipedia --Mohamed Ouda (talk) 08:55, 21 May 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi Mohamed Ouda. Thanks. Please add a brief summary of the writing contest on the main report page -- if there was a specific topic, the number of participants, the number of articles created, and how the winners were judged (quantity? quality? both?). Please also add the costs to the expense table. Thanks, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 17:00, 21 May 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi Alex Wang (WMF) , I added the brief now --Mohamed Ouda (talk) 23:41, 27 May 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
