Censoring or WP:NPOV enforcement?

edit

Can you cite a case in which the conservative viewpoint was supported by a clear majority of quality reliable sources and excluded or downplayed anyway?

I'm asking because, without knowing your specific case, it looks like "Here's another complainer who says their free speech was stifled when what really happened was that they were told to follow WP:V and WP:NPOV or go home." I didn't follow the case closely, but my knee-jerk is that this is also what happened with the feminists who were blocked from Gamergate: Some non-Wikipedians hear about a hot-button issue on Wikipedia, join up as newbs, and don't know that they're not allowed to just go in and change the article text without following our ten million sourcing rules. I guess what I'm saying is, could this problem be solved simply by getting a few Wall Street Journal articles into the ref section next to the The New York Times? Darkfrog24 (talk) 12:14, 22 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

The harassment blade cuts both ways

edit

Thank you for illustrating the span of harassment. The first amendment (to the constitution of the United States) may be more meaningful to citizens of that country than to other members of Wikipedia's world community. By conventional definitions, users with liberal perspectives may perceive themselves as the primary victims of harassment by a conservative majority; but individuals expressing viewpoints at both ends of the spectrum may simultaneously perceive themselves as harassed. Controlling harassment should be an issue of importance to all users expressing minority viewpoints. Thewellman (talk) 16:59, 22 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Seconded. I get the impression that this hits conservatives more than liberals, but it is accurately described as a minority viewpoint problem. Darkfrog24 (talk) 17:12, 22 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia is not the U.S. Government

edit

You appear to be confused about what the right to free speech means. Funcrunch (talk) 17:24, 22 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

WP:FREESPEECH. Whether it's accurate or not, "free speech" has become code for "whiner who wants to ignore Wikipedia's sourcing and neutrality rules." Darkfrog24 (talk) 17:43, 22 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Seconded, This grant idea is conflating a feature of US law that prevents (with exceptions) the US Government interfering with citizens speech and NPOV inclusiveness.

  • I actually came on here to post about the freedom of speech comment as well. The First Amendment only covers free speech about the government. For example, the FA means that a private citizen or a news commentator can make a disparaging remark about the PotUS or protest the government without fear of the government arresting them for saying these things, whereas a totalitarian government can and would. It doesn't mean that you can say whatever you want, wherever you want, without any reprisal from others or the particular venue hosting said remarks.
Should people try to honor different viewpoints? Yes. Should they do so without being nasty or dismissive? Yes. Are they obligated to by the First Amendment? No. Tokyogirl79 (talk) 05:55, 25 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
