Project summary

edit

Briefly summarize your project proposal.

The Wiki Loves Earth Taraba 2024 is a pioneering project that aims to address the underrepresentation of Taraba State on Wikimedia platforms by establishing a Wikimedia training and awareness initiative within the state. It seeks to educate residents about the true nature of Wikimedia projects so as to stop misconceptions about them, encourage them to become editors, and equip them with the necessary skills to contribute effectively. By organizing offline and physical trainings focused on equipping the participants with the essential skills to navigate the interface of Wikimedia and its sister projects, this project will promote local knowledge and ensure that the state's history, culture, institutions, and achievements are accurately represented on Wikimedia platforms, as well as aligning with Wikimedia’s mission.

Activities

edit

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

The project aims to have two physical sessions, one online session, and an edith-a-thon.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.
You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

Wikimedia User Group is being notified about the project. See https://meta.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikimedia_User_Group_Nigeria#Wiki_Loves_Earth_Taraba_State_2024 for reference.

Also, as a writer who has garnered large audience in the state, I will use my Facebook page to promote the project. 3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

Mailing will be adopted for professionalism and a WhatsApp group will be created and used for that course throughout the span of the project.

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals. (NOTE: all experienced Wikimedia editors MUST endorse your proposal as proof of availability)
For example: User:Kaizenify

User:Yahuzaishat An indigene and resident of Taraba State, will take on the role of project lead. He is a graduate of the 2023/4 Organizer’s Lab Cohort. He had the privilege of facilitating the Wikimedia Awareness at Pen Resource University and Wikimedia Awareness in Ummah College of Health Sciences and Technology. He will serve as project lead and an offline facilitator.

User:Huzaifakumo is a dedicated editor that participated in different wikimedia trainings including the "Train the Trainers Wikimedia Training", Northeast Nigeria Edition, He also facilitated a Wikimedia project for the first time "My Ability in Disability Wikimedia training". He was also recognized among the top editors during different Wikimedia trainings including the Wikimedia Promotion in Federal University Kashere, and runner-up during the Wiki Climate Campus Tour (Federal University Kashere). As a seasoned editor with a keen eye for detail and a passion for local history, he will serve as an offline facilitator.

User:Meritkosy a fellow of the Wikipedia in African Libraries(WikiAfLIB) and the program manager of the Wikimedia Gombe Network. She had participated in several AfLIA led Wiki training for African librarians - Basics of Wikipedia Editing Learning Circle, African Librarians Week, 1Lib1Ref - Wiki Loves Libraries Nigeria, African Youth Month 2022 Wikidata Training. She is the project lead for Wikimedia Awareness and Training in Federal College of Education, Gombe and also the project lead for "Upskilling Librarians in Gombe on open knowledge practices through Wikimedia projects. In this project, she will serve as an online facilitator who will help the participants to create Wikipedia account and detail the intricacies of Wikimedia and its sisters project to them.

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

The participants lack the knowhow of navigating Wikipedia's landscape. In order to support them, I alongside the other team member will give them hands-on and first class knowledge on basic editing and how to upload pictures on WikiCommon while bearing Content Policies in mind.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

The WhatsApp group used during the event will be renamed to "Wikimedia Taraba State Network" for ensuring that participants remain engaged with Wikipedia even after the project.

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

Of course, yes. Taraba State as the third largest state in Nigeria, lacks active Wikipedia editors despite owning numerous tertiary institutions. Thus, this project is what will bring Wikimedia awareness to the state through the virtual and physical engagements.
