Project summary

edit

Briefly summarize your project proposal.

  • Wiki Loves Earth (WLE) 2024 is an annual international photographic competition that celebrates the natural heritage and scenic landscapes around the globe. Organized by Wikimedia chapters, groups, and local Wikipedia volunteers, WLE 2024 will take place from May through July. This project invites participants to capture and share photographs of their local natural environments, contributing to the Wikimedia Commons repository. The primary objective of WLE is to amass a diverse collection of high-quality images depicting natural heritage sites. These sites include nature reserves, landscape conservation areas, national parks, scenic regions, remarkable gardens, and other protected areas. By doing so, WLE aims to enhance the visual content available for articles in Wikipedia and other Wikimedia Foundation projects, supporting the mission of making knowledge freely accessible to everyone. WLE 2024 will feature separate competitions in each participating country, managed by local teams who will tailor the event to their specific regional contexts. This includes setting competition periods, rules, and prizes, which may vary slightly to accommodate local needs and circumstances. The competition encourages participation from a wide audience by focusing not only on nationally significant sites but also on those protected at regional levels. Participants are encouraged to explore and document a wide variety of natural sites such as forests, parks, gardens, rock formations, and caves. This inclusive approach ensures that many individuals will find natural heritage sites in proximity to their locations, fostering broad engagement and raising awareness about the importance of preserving natural environments.

Activities

edit

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

As part of the Wiki Loves Earth 2024 initiative, I will be conducting a field trip to several creative sites within the Enugu North senatorial district, alongside organizing a training and practical session on how to make photo uploads and properly categorize them on Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. The sites to be visited include palm oil extraction sites, local pot and basin makers, thatch house makers, basket weavers, local decorators, honey extraction sites, hand weavers, yam barns, carpentry shops, and the Department of Fine and Applied Arts at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) for creative artwork exploration. Participants will have the opportunity to capture images of these diverse and culturally significant activities. The training session will provide hands-on experience in uploading photos to Wikimedia Commons and categorizing them effectively to enhance their visibility and usefulness on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.
You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using. we will informed people by creating Whatsapp group

I have posted a notification on the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria talk page. Here is the link:Talk:Wikimedia User Group Nigeria#Wiki Loves Earth 2024

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

Participants will be notified about the program through the University of Nigeria Wikimedia community forum, WhatsApp messenger and physical meetings/invitations and group invitations to different departments within the University of Nigeria, Nsukka community.

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals. (NOTE: all experienced Wikimedia editors MUST endorse your proposal as proof of availability)
For example: User:Kaizenify

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

  • The major equipment needed for this project are; laptop computers, wifi routers, power source and projectors. We intend hiring these items from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka ICT centre during the physical event. Most of the participants have personal computers to continue working with after the training days. As regarding skills, the community is endowed with an array of experienced editors who can easily carry the new editors along.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

  • Follow-up sessions will be held online via WhatsApp where we will have continuous engagements to provide assistance to participants and also to share vital help tips.

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

This project not only aims to enhance the representation of African creativity on Wikimedia projects but also to empower local community members by providing training on how to upload and categorize their photos effectively. By doing so, we hope to foster greater participation and pride in documenting and sharing their cultural heritage, ensuring that these rich traditions are preserved and accessible to a global audience.
