Grants:Wikimedia UG Nigeria Grants/Wikimedia User Group Nigeria Community Support Fund/Opening up knowledge about Anambra North Senatorial Zone

The biggest online encyclopedia – Wikimedia is inclusive of articles from all over the world. However, navigating the site has shown that many communities, local government areas and senatorial zones in Anambra State are not duly represented in Wikipedia. It becomes surprising that a state known as the “Light of the Nation as well as host the biggest market in West Africa has lots of gaps in knowledge and articles in Wikipedia. For instance, there are three senatorial zones, twenty one local government areas with over one hundred and seventy seven communities. Albeit it to state that many of these communities do not have spaces while many more have only stubs.

Again, the existing articles on communities in Anambra are begging to be improved with authentic and accurate sources, as well as copyediting and fixing typos. Interaction with some people revealed that many of them do not even realize their communities are missing from the world number one encyclopedia. Besides, some of them disclosed that they did not know, they could help in improving the articles or create their own in Wikipedia. It is therefore important that the gap is filled with volunteers, especially in articles on communities from Anambra North Senatorial Zone in Anambra state, to tell their own stories for the world to know. This project offers the insight, training, skills and facilitation in increasing participation in the Know your communities and contribute to their knowledge in Anambra North Senatorial Zone

This Wikipedia program will be blended. The participants have laptops, smartphones and other electronic devices. They also have good information literacy to enable them to navigate the internet. They will be taught how to sign up to Wikipedia, do online search, find, retrieve and use the information to create and improve articles on Anambra North Senatorial Zone. They will be taught how to create new articles and join other Wikipedia user groups for more inclusive programs. The edit-a-thon will last for two weeks. The datapage will calculate participants’ contributions on the Wikipedia and the participants with highest contributions will be given prizes.
