Goals edit

Despite the challenges of time constraints, we were able to complete the project documenting photo stories of a historic landmark in Imo State that gave us a sense of the independence celebration and engagement.

Learning edit

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

Although it was a late strategy, referring to another partner that was easy to work with within the short timeframe was amazing. Although the previous museum partner did not pull through, it was an amazing experience for some of our members visiting a museum for the first time and learning about the rich knowledge behind the enclosed walls.

  • What did not work so well?

We had a number of delays with the project. First, is the delay in getting the grant feedback, approval and disbursement beyond the stated time. This affected the intended time of the project and by the time we had started, it coincided with some of our members who are students and have to call back to school due to the university strike call off. Other of our members who are working could not also participate fully. Secondly, our proposed partner, National Museum of Unity Enugu created a lot of back and forth with the protocols for approving the use of the images (many of which should have entered the public domain space) even with their granted permission to visit the museum and take photos of galleries and objects. Given that the project is time-bound and waiting ceaselessly without any positive result, we had a thought to withdraw the partnership and seek a fresh partner that still reflects the object of the project. We then approached the priest in residence at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Emekuku which is the second place the first missionaries visited on arrival in Imo state with 100 years of its existence. We reached a collaborative agreement that the church will be involved in the process of the photowalk, tagging and picture selection. Given our limited funds, a few of our members visited the church and took photos of the church, its surroundings and facilities. After that, they did frequent visits to work with the priest to edit, select and tag the pictures.

This happened in the window time of late October 2022 to mid February 2023.

  • What would you do differently next time?

We would explore different partners rather than one and always have an alternative partner in place in case one of them doesn't come through, then we can easily refer to the one that has a clear process to work with in time before the project time elapses.
