Project scope
editWikimedia Czech Republic has been asked several times to provide the members and other Wikimedia projects contributors a possibility to digitize documents of their own using an equipment of above standard quality. The equipment can serve the owners of the documents directly, but the project of scanning-by-mail is also being prepared for the contributors from distant parts of the country.
After the discussion with the potential users and after evaluating their needs, the Wikimedia Czech Republic is determined to purchase a film scanner with the following characteristics: Minimal optical resolution 7200 x 7200 dpi, colour depth 48 bits, speed 40 sec per picture, standard film formats. They were set with regards to the needs and standards of the respective projects.
The required financial amount corresponds to the standard scanners with mentioned characteristics.
Project goal
editThe goal of the project is to allow the contributors to take advantage of the equipment that is not common in the households or schools, as the common equipment usually limits the results of the scanning process.
Non-financial requirements
editNo non-financial requirements.
Fit to strategy
editThe Wikimedia Czech Republic digitalization equipment should thus lead to improving of the quality of the media files. It can also provoke uploading of the materials from the paper or film archives of the households that are usually missing on the Wikimedia projects (in comparison with the materials from the contemporary era of the digital photography).
Other benefits
editRunning the chapter's scanner should provoke more activity in digitalization of old materials. The discussion about what available documents can be digitalized and can be valuable for the Wikimedia projects has already started during the preparation of this project, we expect it should grow even more intensive when the scanner is purchased and used.
Measures of success
editDuring the period of the running project, the equipment will produce at least 5000 high technical and/or content quality files from the films, that will be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.
