  1. I learned from Ivo (Estonia) about the WIkiScience Competition, informed my fellow UG members via Facebook. I’m trying to see with the UG how we can join this competition in Egypt.
  2. I received WLM swag items for Wiki Loves Monuments and informed my UG about it to be given to the panel and winners.
Option 3: New Creation: What was one useful outcome that was created at the event for the Wikimedia movement?
Add a link to something new that was created as a result of your participation in this event (for example, you might link to a new tool that you and your co-participants worked on at the Hackathon, or to pages created in a workshop you participated in).
  1. I contributed to the McGill University Editathon by taking pictures and writing an article in Arabic.

Connections edit

  1. I belive the attendance of the presentation I took part in would be 40-45.
  2. After the presentation, I made connections with other researchers and editors with similar interests such as Loren Koenig from the New York City Working Group on Gender and Language and the Wikipedian-in-Residence Monika Sengul-Jones. I got great advice from Koenig regarding research writing on gender issues. Having a network of wiki researchers is always helpful when it comes to discussing research issues and developing ideas. It is what lead me to what I did so far.
  3. The User Group table proved helpful since I got the chance to meet a lot of people there like Rohini Lakshane (India), Andrea Kleiman (Argentina), Christian Vater (Germany), and Maurice Guetrin (Canada). Kleiman and I are currently collaborating in the MENA Latin Contest. In addition to discussing our UG activities, Lakshane and I discussed surveys and gender related issues that added to my understanding of the survey I am planning to do. I also got to meet Eric Bolinder and learn about the wiki application he has created with his team. Since his tea is based in Egypt, I have plans to meet with his team and explore ways of collaboration. I also met Maya Alkateb-Chami, director of Jusoor, a non-profit organization made of Syrian expatriates. We talked about ways to incorporate Wikipedia editing and Education Program in the organization’s activity and I showed her relevant material. Hopefully, a new education program would come out of this.
  4. I got interested in WikiSpeech after I met Sebastian Berlin from Wikimedia Sverige. We talked about the project and did some quick feedback on the current system for Arabic with more to come in the future when needed.
  5. I had a problem with the internal links addition to the Content Translation Tool and met Amir Aharoni who helped me out. His session about editing Wikipedia through mobile phones applications was very interesting as well. Looking forward to this application.
  6. I got to know more about the different ways in which Wikiversity could be used by talking with Alexandre Abdo from Brazil. It changed my perception of how this Wiki space could be used.
  7. I was happy to meet Vassia (Bulgaraia) again and get more enthusiasm to re-start 100 Wikidays for the second time (currently compiling list of articles).
  8. It was great to see my fellow Arab Wikipedians. We actually rarely meet in-person, so this was a great opportunity to talk and meet contributors I have never met.

(Update on number 3: I met with Bolinder and his Cairo based team to find more ways in which WP can get better benefits from his work. Currently, we are in contact to add the features WP would appreciate.)

Anything else edit

  1. I worked closely with Aaron, Mako, and Tilman before and during the pre-conference days on our presentation at Wikimania. I presented a part that is closely related to my research about gender gap in Wikipedia.
  2. I uploaded 116 for Wikimania to Commons, created 15 categories (most of the them are for sessions I attended), and did some clean up and organization for category:Wikimania_2017
  3. I set up the Egyptian Wikimedians UserGroup table in the Community Village to promote the activities of the UG and open room for collaboration.(Pictures here)
  4. I got to do WikiArabia facilitation inside and outside the community village as I tried to connect the interested people to different members of the team.
  5. I gave an interview to Cover World Meida about Arabic Wikipedia.
  6. I gave an interview for an introduction video to be added to Arabic Wikipedia portal page.
  7. I participated in a survey and discussion on the technical wishlist and the search features on Wikipedia with Johanna Strodt from Wikimedia Deutschland.
  8. The legal health presentations and the coolest wikimedia projects were very interesting; the former informed me of the ways the Foundation offers legal help when needed while the latter opened my mind to different ways and realms in which wiki activity can take place which is great when I'm telling people in my context about how they can participate in Wikimedia projects.
  9. One important meetup I attended was the Wikimedia Diversity Conference Meetup since it introduced me to more diversity issues that could use scientific research, particularly gender diversity in the Wikimedia projects. This meetup put paved the way for a better fruitful contribution to the Diversity Conference.
