  • I'd love to see Pragun attend the conference and meet up with the Wikidata team and other developers. It'd be a very good finishing touch for his Google Summer of Code project to actually meet the people he worked with for the past months. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 11:43, 21 August 2013 (UTC)
  • I think Pragun being in Berlin would be useful for both the SMW community and the Wikidata community. --denny (talk) 11:47, 21 August 2013 (UTC)
  • Per Lydia and Denny --Karsten Hoffmeyer 12:10, 21 August 2013 (UTC)
  • Having Pragun attend the conference would be a very valuable experience, allowing him to meet the community and the Wikidata team and learn more about SMW. He seems very interested in continued involvement in Wikimedia and Wikidata. Cheers. Aude (talk) 16:45, 21 August 2013 (UTC)

Proposed Participation edit

I'm an active contributor to MediaWiki (profile). I've been selected to participate in Google Summer of Code 2013 with the Wikimedia foundation and I'm working on the project, Mobilize Wikidata. At SMWCon, I would like to meet and interact with the Wikidata team with whom I've been working over the internet. I would like to work with the Wikidata project in the future as well, so it would be very nice for me to be able to discuss future goals and vision of the project with the actual team members and see how I can contribute further. I would love to speak about the work that I'm doing on my project and what all could be done to improve upon it when the GSoC period is over. My project intends to kickstart the usage of Wikidata on mobile devices but there's a lot that'll remain to be done in so far as usability and features are concerned. I would also like to speak about how contributing to Open source software organizations such as Wikimedia is not only good in principle, but especially useful for students who would like to learn beyond the scope of their degree programs and thus encourage it.

I've proposed a lightning talk on this matter : http://semantic-mediawiki.org/wiki/SMWCon_Fall_2013#Proposed_lightning_talks

Goal and Expected Impact edit

As a result of my participation, I will be able to interact with the Wikidata team in person which I feel will really help me contribute to the project in the future. I also hope to encourage people to contribute to Mediawiki and generate some interest in the further development of my GSoC project.

Other sources of funding edit

Google's Open Source Programs Office is ready to endorse USD 500 for such a GSoC mentor approved travel. However, this isn't a public announcement and will be awarded only after the program. If the Wikimedia Foundation chooses to accept my support request, Google's Open Source office will issue a PO and reimburse the foundation, through an invoice, an amount up to USD 500.
