Proposed Participation

edit

I write to request financial support to attend the US OpenGLAM Launch Weekend in Berkeley. Sarah Stierch has asked me to the invite-only event, but my travel funds for the year have already been allocated for upcoming speaking engagements at the AAM and Museums and the Web conferences.

During the OpenGLAM Launch Weekend, I plan to give a lightning talk about the challenges that tend to slow the processes of opening up at my museum. I hope that this inspires a discussion among participants where we can work through these issues and develop strategies for communicating options to our institutional stakeholders.

I have been a follower and strong supporter of the GLAM-Wiki movement, and feel like I can be a stronger and more substantial advocate armed with the tools and talking points to help my institution, the Art Institute of Chicago, make meaningful decisions about incorporating and sharing data via GLAM-Wiki platforms. I am on a twelve-person core planning team at the Art Institute leading the institution’s strategic planning process, which is looking related issues of publishing, audience engagement, etc. Additionally, we are in the initial stages of re-imagining our online web collection and associated resources. I am a key decision-maker in these projects.

Outside of my institution, I speak widely about museum digital publishing and moderate the blog Beyond the Printed Page: Museum Digital Publishing Bliki. I am also active in the GLAM community by co-chairing Program Committee of the Museum Computer Network (MCN) conference.

For the above reasons, I believe I will be a valuable and informed advocate both at my institution and in the wider GLAM communities if I’m able to attend the US OpenGLAM Launch Weekend.

Goal and Expected Impact

edit

As a result of attending US OpenGLAM Launch Weekend, I will have the knowledge and tools to be more of an influencer both at my institution and with in the professional GLAM community.
