Outcome
editDuring the event, I was able to connect with a good number of national organizers of Wiki Loves Monuments. Both during the Workshop on Wiki Loves Monuments that we organized, during the meetup 'making Wiki Loves Monuments thrive in Africa' and in hallway conversations and dedicated meetings, I worked (with others of the international team) with current and potential future organizers to make WLM work in their countries. We discussed uploading the monument lists to Wikidata, specific bottle necks and general introductions to the competition model.
Specifically, one of the goals this year was to get a better hold of the challenges and opportunities in African countries, and we discussed that extensively in the meetup. I have published a short initial report (further analysis and follow-up to be expected) here: commons:Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments/Making WLM thrive in Africa/Wikimania 2018.
Connections
editI met especially a lot of local organizers of Wiki Loves Monuments from emerging communities that are considering to organize Wiki Loves Monuments. I was part of the Wiki Loves Monuments workshop and presented a session about what I learned writing a Wikipedia manual. Especially the latter was well-attended. The time at the hackathon was invaluable to discuss strategies with national organizers, needs for the Wiki Loves Monuments infrastructure and get some more general conversations out of the way.
