Outcome

edit

Public policy meeting.
Option 1: Shared Experience: What is one way you shared something from your experience with your community (either locally or globally), after the event?

My participation in this conference, unlike others I have attended, was much more involved in strategic issues for the improvement and development of the planning and activities of Wikimedia Argentina, chapter of which I am a Board Member and recently I was elected Secretary. The September 16th WMAR board meeting, which coincided with the Ordinary General Assembly, which is usually attended by most of the chapter members, was an excellent opportunity to report on my participation in Wikimania and to talk about the conclusions reached in each work session, as well as the discussions with different Wikimedians throughout the three days, and answer questions related to the conference in general. At the same meeting, it was extended to all present the possibility of channeling any query through the mailing list that integrate all the members of the chapter.

Connections

Iberocoop meeting on August 12th. That's me standing on the right corner!

The first meeting that I would like to highlight is the one that took place between the staff of Wikimedia Argentina and the members of the FDC. Two chapter board members took part of it, including me. Beyond mutual feedback in matters of planning and strategy, the meeting was especially interesting as it allowed the meeting between people who, being involved in different ways in the movement, had not had the opportunity to meet personally. During it, there was feedback from the FDC regarding the reports submitted by Wikimedia Argentina, pointing out several opportunities for improvement. It was also possible to explain the economic and political singularities of our country, which decisively influence the moment of making the annual budget and that, in opportunities, cannot be clearly visualized by someone who is not involved in local affairs.

Another highlight was public policy meeting, with several members from different chapters and groups, where each introduced ourselves and the problems exposed through each country. The case narrated by the South African attendees was noteworthy, fighting a lawsuit for copyright and also that of members of an NGO that helped people at risk for defending the right to access information.

Finally, I would also emphasize the meeting between members of Iberocoop, of which I am a representative of WM-AR, where the repercussions of the document written in Buenos Aires during Iberoconf 2017 were treated, as well as the feedback from the Wikimedia Foundation and how it could be improved communication between both parties. Possible joint activities were also analyzed, such as Wikilesa. In addition to the above meetings, I had the opportunity to meet and talk with wikimedians from different countries like Mexico, Chile, Spain, Italy, Colombia, Brazil, Georgia and Wikidonna User Group.

Anything else

  • I have created this category for photos taken by me during the conference. In the next few weeks I will continue uploading them.
  • Finally, I would like to thank the Wikimedia Foundation for giving me the opportunity to participate in this conference and for all the experiences and learning that I have taken, arising directly from it.
