Strategic plan edit

Introduction edit

In the period from July 1st, 2020 to July 1st, 2021 The Wikimedia Community will work to achieve the goals defined by the Strategic Plan and the Annual work plan. The projects are carefully planned at the Community level in accordance with current needs and capacities. Considering the effort to align the budget constraint with the community's needs for growth and increase in the number of projects, three program areas were selected for the indicated period, representing the focal points of the organization's functioning within which the projects will be implemented and upgraded. Also, the focus of the new plan is to open up the community to international partners. Although in the current period have been achieved a dozen cooperation, there is a need to improve the functioning of this segment of the Community.

Note: The planned activities are in line with the recommendations of the WMF and the recommendations of the World Health Organization regarding the pandemic of the Covid-19 virus. In this regard, all activities involving live work will be implemented from January 2021. In the case that a pandemic lasts longer than planned and the state of emergency does not end, the Community will act in accordance with the recommendations of the WMF.

Wiki Ambassador in the Republic Srpska is a project that involves staying of the delegation of Wiki Ambassadors - Wikimedia and Wikipedia members at the appropriate GLAM institution. The aim of the project is to collect relevant data and materials that are difficult to reach due to a lack of literature and to release them through Wikimedia projects.

The project was launched in 2016 and since then its sustainability has been confirmed as well as the need for re-organization. In addition to releasing material valuable to Wikimedia projects, Wiki Ambassadors also train employees to use Wikimedia projects in their work. Within the specified timeframe, cooperation will be established with one GLAM institution for which one of the Wiki Ambassador from the Wikimedia Community of Republic of Srpska will be hired.

During the project, realization Engaged Wiki ambassador will realize the 8 day-long working visits to the GLAM institution. On that occasion, they will train employees to work on Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, Wikipedia and QRPedia. During the planned visits, in parallel with the training of employees, work will be done to create content on Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons related to the poorly represented topic on Wikipedia - Orthodox temples located in the territory of Republika Srpska. The basis for the selection of topics is the research conducted by the Wikimedia community of the Republic of Srpska. Only about 40% of the content was found to be processed. The rest of the content that makes up a unique list is not covered by the lack of literature that was lost during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the 1990s. The organizing team has taken some steps to bridge this gap - Metropolitanates have been contacted and part of the lists have already been provided to the community. The goal is to complete the list and to create articles based on the available literature obtained by churches and monasteries. The long-term goal is to complete the base through various activities and to find in it all Orthodox temples located on the territory of the Republic of Srpska.

Goals:

  • expansion and improvement GLAM program in the Republic of Srpska;
  • implementation of Wikimedia projects in GLAM institutions;
  • expanding the network of associates;

Collaboration with international partners.

Meet Srpska project is one of the significant projects which is traditionally held every year and achieved a record in terms of planned measures of success. It is a contest in writing articles about the Republic of Srpska on Serbian Wikipedia that in the last two years, assumed the proportions of international competition. In order to continue this positive trend, the Community will organize the Meet the Srpska Competition during the indicated period with additional expansion - the inclusion of international partners in cooperation (applies primarily to non-CEE countries and then to the CEE group). The activities that make up the Meet the Srpska project are a Wikipedia article writing contest and an editorial marathon (live or online, depending on the Covid-19 pandemic situation). Also, in addition to the competition on the Serbian Wikipedia, competitions will be organized in the languages of the partner organizations on their home Wikipedia.

Goals:

  • increasing quality content on Wikipedia regarding various topics related to the Republic of Srpska;
  • creating content related to the Republic of Srpska on Wikipedia in multiple languages;
  • promotion of Wikimedia and its projects;

During the indicated period, a two-day local conference will be held, bringing together at least 30 participants. The conference will bring together Wikimedia and Wikipedia members who are part of the Wikimedia community of the Republic of Srpska and those who are not, but have participated in some activities and supported the work of the community. The purpose of the conference is to motivate participants to work more actively and give them a sense of belonging to the community. In addition, the idea is to create a quality program where, in addition to learning about Wikimedia projects, advanced lectures will be held so that everyone can find the right area of interest and acquire relevant knowledge and skills that they will later use in the community. It is of utmost importance for the community that as many of its members as possible are adequately trained in community work, because as the community expands, the volume of work becomes larger and it is very difficult to achieve good results while several people do everything(from macro and micro-planning, through implementation to submission of reports). Also, on the sidelines of the conference, live meetings will be held with members of the Management Board and members of the organizational team. Although meetings of this type are regularly held online, the importance of live meetings for the purpose of strengthening links among members, for open discussions, the presentation of ideas and the planning of future projects is of paramount importance.

Goals:

  • at least 1 local conference with at least 30 participants will be held in a given period;
  • promoting Wikipedia and highlighting its importance;
  • promotion of Wikimedia and the Wikimedia movement;
  • attracting new volunteers to join the Wikimedia mission;
  • Wikimedia and the promotion of its projects through introducing conference participants to the guiding principles and most important achievements;
  • Introducing target audience with CC licenses, with emphasis on their importance;
  • capacity building of the Wikimedia Community of the Republic of Srpska through the exchange of new ideas and joint activities for the improvement and implementation of already planned project ideas in the Republic of Srpska;
  • expanding the Wikimedia community of Republic of Srpska with new members;
  • improving the capacities already reached by the Wikimedia Community of Republic of Srpska through a positive impact on the enthusiasm of current members;
  • positive impact on the general public in the Republic of Srpska with the aim of creating a positive climate for future projects in our region where Wikimedia and its projects will be recognized as positive and significant.

Measures of success:

  • 30 participants;
  • 20 media releases;
  • > 5 new community members;
  • 50-100 Facebook followers/pages likes;
  • at least 4 new collaborations between volunteers;
  • stronger community;
  • > 6 new users will become active members in the next 3 months (active member is a member who will be active on some offline activities, who will lead online projects or will be an active editor on a Wiki project;
  • 2 agreements on new projects.

The aforementioned will contribute to the achievement of a longer-term goal - the formation of the Women's Wiki in Republika Srpska, which independently under the auspices of the Wikimedia Community of the Republic of Srpska, would edit Wikimedia projects and independently develop and implement various projects.

In addition, regarding the mitigation gender gap, the work on the project Wiki Women, which began in 2016 in collaboration with Wikimedia Argentina, which is still active, will be continued.

Goals:

  • forming a third group of female editors in the Republic of Srpska
  • upgrading the Gender Gap program in Republic of Srpska;
  • attracting new partners;

In the period from August 1 to September 30, 2020, a competition in collecting photographs of protected natural and immovable cultural and historical assets of the Republic of Srpska (WLE + WLM) was held. In an effort to maintain continuity in the work and for the Community, despite the collapse caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, to offer various contents to the public, editors, and members, it was decided that the competition be held and adapted to the emergency situation. All activities were realized online. The planned photo tours and the ceremony of announcing the winner were missed due to the security situation.

The competition lasted for two months, and during that time, 666 photographs of protected natural and immovable cultural and historical assets of the Republic of Srpska were uploaded. 47 photographers took part in the competition. This year's competition was marked by an increase in the number of participants - professional photographers, as well as an increase in the number of protected areas and monuments whose photos have not been available on Wikimedia projects so far.

The Wikimedia Community of the Republic of Srpska, as before, provided all the necessary technical support necessary for the smooth implementation of the competition - from the preparatory to the final phase of the project. In addition to the above, the project has attracted a lot of public attention and, thanks to good cooperation with the media, has taken a satisfactory position in the media space. In addition, all tourist organizations in the country have on several occasions, sharing information about the competition, invited the public to take part in the photo competition Trace of Soul 2020.

An expert jury composed of the most eminent experts from relevant fields selected the 20 most beautiful photos of the photo competition Trace of Soul 2020. The photos were divided into two categories - Natural and Stationary Cultural Heritage.

Community activities

World War II… 75 Years After

WWII.

Barnstar World War II… 75 Years After.

The worsening of the epidemiological situation caused changes in the planned activities. The community was faced with great challenges on how to continue continuity in work and to adapt to numerous limitations. In July, the community proposed the project named World War II… 75 Years After. The project is all about 75 years since the end of the deadliest episodes in human history. Over 60 countries took part in the 6-years long military conflict. World War II took over 50.000.000 lives, and more than 35.000.000 were wounded. Many of them lost their lives after the war. Hundreds of battles were fought on dozens of fronts. Thousands of buildings were demolished and hundreds of new ones built. Despite that, life was renewed and continued after this catastrophe of global proportions. New ideas, new movements - new history were born. We have proposed an initiative to the global community to get involved and to use the month of September for marking the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War with a series of Edit-a-Thons and competitions dedicated to this topic. This project was not originally planned in our Annual play. It was the ad-hoc initiative, with no spent, and the results are great! The initiative was accepted by GLAM Macedonia, Wikimedia Armenia, Wikimedia Community User Group Greece, Wikimedians of Bashkortostan User Group, Wikimedians of the Republic of Srpska, Wikipedia Education program at the Hashemite University, and Women in Red. The results of the initiative are: 7 local organizers (chapters, user groups, etc..), 519 new articles, 91 participants, 477 photos of monuments dedicated to the victims of World War II to Wikimedia Commons, and two GLAM collaborations in which one book of 224 pages was digitized, 18 photographs were released and one lecture was held to the staff.

Globally, we have provided logistics and support to interested organizers. In addition to the initiative itself, we launched a page dedicated to the project and created templates on Meta. Also, we proposed several models of project implementation and offered logistical support. We also monitored the course of project implementation and summarized the results. In addition to regular communication on the mailing list, we also wrote blog posts.

At the local level, we organized several activities with the limits due to the pandemic. Activities were directed in three directions: Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons, GLAMs, and internal things. On Serbian Wikipedia, we launched the edit-a-thon (including all preparations, monitoring, and reporting). We managed to organize cooperation with two GLAM institutions. Our GLAM coordinator organized online lectures to the staff of the National and University Library of the Republic of Srpska and the Museum of Old Herzegovina. Employees are informed of the concept of our projects and Wikimedia projects. Thanks to these actions, we achieved two symbolic cooperation and agreed to continue cooperation in future projects. From the Museum of Old Herzegovina, we got 28 photos of WWII and with the National and University Library of the Republic of Srpska, we worked on the digitization of the book and its uploading on Commons. Last but not least, our third area of activity was reporting, writing community blog posts, communicating with the community, analyzing data, monitoring activities, and so on.

The seminar for teachers was not held due to general orders of the Republic Crisis Staff for emergencies and gathering bans, as well as the difficult working conditions in which teachers found themselves due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In accordance with the above, the realization of the seminar for teachers has been postponed for the next year (in agreement with the grant officer).

Despite the difficult working conditions and numerous limitations, the Community managed to contribute to the improvement of the Edu Wiki program in the Republic of Srpska by establishing cooperation with the Theological high school of St. Peter Dabrobosanski from Foča - a special high school for priests. The cooperation was established in correlation with the activities of the Wiki Ambassador project in the Republic of Srpska. The students were trained to work on Wikipedia in Serbian, creating articles about Orthodox churches and monasteries located on the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which are not sufficiently represented on the Serbian Wikipedia. In addition, this institution provided relevant literature for the purposes of writing articles, which is otherwise inaccessible to the general public, which is one of the causes of poor coverage of this topic on Wikipedia. The community is very satisfied with the establishment of this cooperation because these schools are quite closed and operate in accordance with special rules. In addition to cooperation on this project and participation in 4 workshops, an agreement on the continuation of cooperation was reached, which we are very proud of, and which we will certainly work on in the coming period. 13 students took part in the workshops.

Night of museum

Night of Museum 2021.

In order to promote Wikimedia projects in the wider community, the Wikimedia community of the Republic of Srpska took part in another public event - the international cultural event Museum Night 2021. The event was organized in cooperation with the Museum of Old Herzegovina in Foča. In addition to the presentation of the Wikimedia GLAM program, the main event was an exhibition of photographs of protected natural and cultural-historical monuments of the Republic of Srpska, created during 2019 as a result of collecting photographs within the photo competition Trace of the Soul. The exhibition was exhibited in the gallery of the Museum of Old Herzegovina for 2 months. During that time, the exhibition was seen by several hundred visitors, and their attention was especially attracted by QR codes specially made for that purpose through QR pedia. Thanks to the cooperation with our community, the Museum of Old Herzegovina in Foča is the only GLAM institution in the Republic of Srpska that has included articles on Wikipedia in its permanent exhibitions through a link to a QR code.

In accordance with the recommendations of the Republic Crisis Staff, 30 guests attended the ceremony and the opening of the exhibition, including the most eminent personalities from public, cultural and political life.

Meet Srpska

The photo was taken during a photo tour in Doboj.

As part of the project Meet Srpska 2020, in addition to online activities that were realized in the first half of the grant period, a live photo tour is planned, which was not realized during the mentioned period due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In order for the project to be completed, the mentioned activity was realized in April, in cooperation with the photo club Doboj. 207 photographs of religious buildings from the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina were collected. Photographs of these objects did not exist on the Wikimedia Commons, nor on the Internet in general, so for us the photographs are a real treasure, especially due to the fact that most of them (89%) were used to illustrate relevant articles written or supplemented during the realization of the Wiki ambassador project. In addition to this type of correlation, this activity is related to another - the presentation of the GLAM program as part of the cultural event Museum Night, during which photos were presented to the public through video beams and video presentations.

Due to the deterioration of the epidemiological picture caused by the Covid-19 pandemic in the country and the world, the Community was forced to adjust the planned activities to the existing restrictions, change the plan and relocate the budget in agreement with the superior grant officer. In an effort to maintain continuity in the work so that the community would not experience stagnation and waste of members, among other things, 4 competitions were organized on Wikipedia in the Serbian . The mentioned plan was presented to the grant officer during the meeting, after whose approval the implementation began.

When organizing the competition, in addition to the selection of poorly represented topics, we took into account the engagement of volunteers in the preparations and the realization. Our goal was to hire new members and train them through direct online work.

In the period from March 15 to May 31, 4 competitions in writing articles were organized on the Serbian Wikipedia, thematically focused on less represented topics, in order to contribute to overcoming the gap in the subsequent representation of various contents on Wikipedia. In addition, special attention was certainly paid to overcoming the gender gap through competition related to women's topics.

Competitions: All About Women, South America, North America, Sports 2021.

A total of 24 participants took part in the competitions. 160 new articles were written and 22 articles were supplemented.
