Wikimedia Mexico is an organization recognized by its engagement to generate strategic alliances, organize meetings and promote free knowledge based on the work and enthusiasm of its volunteers. This year, we have staff for the first time, so we were able to generate new collaborations, continue those that already were established, develop the Education Program and take care of the operational and administrative management of the chapter.

Community support

This year, one of our goals is to organize more face-to-face meetings with our community, in order to share knowledge and experiences about our collaboration in the Wikimedia projects. Thus, we are going to organize a monthly meeting for our edition campaign #JuevesWiki (#WikiThursday) and our annual meeting of partners, the 2nd Wikimedia Mexico’s Colloquium.

Wikimania

Wikimania is a motivating experience for wikipedians. However, due to limitations in scholarships, just a few volunteers of Wikimedia Mexico have attended more than one Wikimania (taking on account that we hosted the event in 2015). Therefore, we want to increase our chapter representation globally and motivate our volunteers.

Goals

At least two persons traveling to Wikimania with WMMX scholarships.
At least two reports of activities.

Board Meetings

To comply with our bylaws and achieve a better governance, we will continue to hold three face-to-face meetings of the WMMX Board.

20th anniversary of Wikipedia in Spanish

In May 2021, Wikipedia in Spanish turns 20 years. For this reason, we are going to organize a meeting with our allies to celebrate and appreciate their collaboration with the free knowledge in Mexico.

Gender Gap

Editatona has become a distinctive project of Wikimedia Mexico. This year, we plan to hire a consultancy to professionalize this effort, expand alliances outside of Mexico City, diversify the activities to encourage the participation of women in other projects like Wikimedia Commons or Wikidata, conduct research about the gender gap and free knowledge phenomenon and finally document the activities about Editatona in Mexico and Latin America.

Content Creation

One of our main goals is to promote the content creation and edition that highlights the cultural and linguistic diversity of our country, adapting to the needs and context of our collaborators. In this way, our allies have kept the interest in promoting activities like workshops, talks or editathons. In addition, we want to continue organizing more events outside of Mexico City and generate local communities interested in Wikimedia projects.

Events

Editathons are the public events more requested by our allies. It includes previous talks and workshops with the staff of each institution, depending on their needs and particular communities.

National Photography Contest

Next year we will organize the 3rd edition of our national photography contest Wiki Loves Mexico, to promote the dissemination of content about mexican culture with free licences. Additionally, we plan to involve new alliances that can have more participation in the organization and dissemination of the contest.

Podcast

We want to produce a monthly podcast to spread Wikimedia projects and free culture as part of our objective of reaching new audiences and communities. We consider inviting people who have collaborated with us in cultural and educational institutions and journalists interested in the free knowledge.

Digitization project

We will design a digitization project to promote and accompany the process of donating collections to Wikimedia Commons. For this, we will require two scanners, one of them will remain in Mexico City and the other one will be moved to different places.

Indigenous Languages

One of the objectives of Wikimedia Mexico is to promote the diversity in Wikimedia projects. In this way, we will continue promoting the creation of Wikipedia in Mayan language, the second indigenous language most spoken in Mexico after Nahuatl, and supporting the creation of a community of editors. Furthermore, next year we will start to edit the Incubator in Triqui and Mixe languages, both of them native from Oaxaca, a state located south of Mexico. In both cases, there are cultural and educational communities that can contribute to the discussion of the construction of knowledge in Wikipedia in indigenous languages.

Goals

Keep the support of the creation of a Mayan Wikipedia community.
Start to edit the Incubator in Triqui and Mixe Languages.

Open GLAM

The Second Open GLAM Meeting, organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, aims to promote the opening of cultural heritage on the Internet, make Wikimedia projects visible as allies in this objective and increase our alliances with organizations interested in culture free.

Reach 100 attendees to the event.
Reach at least 2 new partners for the chapter.

Education

This year, we had for the first time an Education officer hired that was able to respond to requests from teachers who want to work with Wikipedia with their students. For the next year, we want to implement the first online course addressed to teachers, design educational resources and video tutorials that support editing Wikipedia, as well as formalize the alliances of our activities.

Reach at least 150 participants.
Reach at least 150 new users, 30% women.
Reach at least 130 new articles and Wikidata items.

Educational Meeting

Due to the interest in the use of Wikipedia and free culture at school, we consider it necessary to maintain an educational meeting with teachers from different states of Mexico who have worked or wish to work with Wikipedia, in order to listen to their ideas, experiences and strengthen the teachers community.

Reach 30 news participants to the event.
Attract 5 new teachers to the program.

Administration and operational activities

Staff

This year we had staff for the first time. That allowed us to increase the number of activities, alliances and take care of administrative management. On the other hand, our allies have requested activities that require more specialized knowledge about the use and management of specific tools and communities. For this reason, this year we request hiring two consultants that can take care of the activities related to Wikidata and Editatona.

Civil Protection Course

The Wikimedia Mexico offices and most of the activities take place in Mexico City, which is located in a seismic zone. Dueto the increase of face-to-face activities in our office, we consider it very important to have training in civil protection and first aid, whose knowledge will allow us to respond to any emergency situation.

Dedicated Server Hosting

Nowadays our communication systems, such as web pages and emails, are in a little server that does not allow us to have a large memory and management capacity of our information. Furthermore, we will need more space and control of our information with the design and development of the online course. For this reason, we request the hiring of a dedicated server that allows us to locate, manage and control our own resources in one place.

This is a brief report on the grantee's progress during the midpoint reporting period: July 1 to December 31, 2020.

Program Story edit

Due to the international context, we at Wikimedia México had to adapt our activities, partnerships, workshops and events to a new level. The management in all areas, all face-to-face and groupal events, Board meetings, and traditional #JuevesWiki (#WikiThursday) had to be online. Abiding with all social distancing policies and norms so our staff, volunteers and collaborators stayed at home, until we have new indications. With this, at the beginning of the pandemic we suffered some delays on our projects, those were restarted remotely so our numbers and goals could be completed. This means that we worked out a way to go against adversity by activating online initiatives such as videoconferences, workshops, courses, Editathons, Editatonas (marathons exclusively for women), video creation and live transmissions. All this proves Wikimedia Mexico commitment by continuing, from the beginning, the improvement of all Wikimedia projects, by supporting our volunteers, affiliates and staff on the creation of free knowledge.

All this virtual environment allowed us to reach volunteers from different parts of our country and the world; and we have examples, Editatona: Wiki-CientíficasMx, that in a single day gathered 27 women, from places like Mexico City,

Guanajuato or Abu Dhabi, with 24 new articles created, 41 edited articles and all about Mexican Scientist Women; another example is the Editatón: Mujeres Documentalistas a la Wiki, which gathered 31 editors, 44 articles were created, 140 were edited, all about women in documentary film. Following this topic, we had Editatona Art + Feminism, Editatona en “Glitter Tlatelolco: Jornada de Arte y Feminismo”, Editatona Mujeres del CIDE editando Wikipedia, Editatona Mujeres en la Arquitectura y el Urbanismo, and more. Each one were arranged with the support of institutions like Instituto Mora, Colectiva Científicas Mx, Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC), and others. This gives continuity with Wikimedia México’s goal to generate a positive influence on the decrease and posterous elimination of the gender gap in Wikipedia, both the amount of articles about women, and women editing Wikipedia; and not only within the mexican context, but global.

Editatón Mujeres Documentalistas a la Wiki.

This past september Wikimedia México started the research: Hacia un diagnóstico con perspectivas de género sobre la participación de mujeres en Wikipedia (Towards a gender perspective diagnosis about women editing Wikipedia); aiming to create a sort of anti-manual to edit with gender perspective on the Free Encyclopedia. Its methodology consist on gender situation/condition interviews, gender biased work division, violence against women and girls, and other topics; focused on raising awareness and creating records that lead us to a feminist code of ethics for Wikipedia. This research will allow us to understand what is happening in terms of the gender gap in the Wikimedia movement, and undoubtedly sets a precedent for the rest of the chapters throughout the world. It is well known that on Wikipedia 1 in 10 Wikipedians is a woman. Our commitment to reducing that gap remains immovable.

Likewise, continuing one of the central topics of our chapter, we created the #WikiClavesVioleta campaign, between the 16 days of activism against gender violence (from November 25 to December 10), with the aim of promoting the participation of women in Wikipedia through the production of communication materials with key information that uses an intergenerational dialogue, accessible language, and a feminist ethical and political position. All these are intertwined ni six thematic priorities: gender perspective, feminist geneology, non sexist language, women representation on media, self-confidence to write end technological appropiation. The result were 8 videos posted on our social networks, with a positive impact amongst our community, audience, and having a good reaction in the media like Reporte Índigo, La Jornada, CIMAC, Trasfondo, SEM México, Once Noticias.

The Education area was particularly very active because take leverage on the new pandemic dynamics, achieving new alliances with educational institutions in the period, based purely on virtual training sessions. Those alliances are nine: Seminario de Investigación de Música y Cine de la Facultad de Música de la UNAM, Colegio de Pedagogía de la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la UNAM, Universidad Autónoma de Tlaxcala, Proyectos Solidarios (social service) del ITESM campus Querétaro, M68 (social service), del Centro Cultural Universitario Tlatelolco (CCUT), CIDI de Diseño Industrial de la UNAM, Facultad de Ciencias, Micología de la UNAM, CETYS Universidad campus Tijuana, DGTIC y CUAIEED de la UNAM. Open Access Week 2020 - WikiEducación: Abrir con propósito, and the Encuentro Educatic 2020 of UNAM.

The Communications are faced an enormous task, this pandemic demanded greater attention to our messages and social networks, managing to exeed the mark of 12 thousand followers on Twitter, the highest in the region’s networks. The way of scheduling publications on social networks was reordered and a monthly newsletter was set. As well as the follow-up of internal and external notes to Wikimedia. Communications are very important to us, so we have continually evaluated and improved our way of communicating inside and outside the organization, and we will continue to do so.

Editathons were also diverse, following a cultural, social and scientific line, among which we have: Editatón #M68 ¡No se olvida!, Editatón Silvestre Revueltas, Editatón escenarios abiertos a la Wikipedia or the Editatón Mico-nocimiento, and others. This allowed us to continue the tradition of generating editing marathons in order to increase free knowledge, generate alliances, complete articles, refine existing ones and continue the passion for creating articles on Wikipedia.

At the same time, the integration of the team in democratic dynamics and practices where each person from the staff, board and volunteers have equal participation in the creation, management and organization of events, workshops, conferences or editing marathons. A closest relation with Wikimedia affiliates in Latin American region continued. With that in context, we were able to successfully run 47 edit events on Wikimedia, from #JuevesWiki (#WikiThursday) to specialized events, as described above. More than 40 editing workshops on Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wiki Commons. Conversations and webinars were created, such as: “Nunca más Wikipedia sin nosotras”; los conversatorios Bibliotecarixs; Crear, compartir y conectar; los webinars Género; Referencias y Oralidad; ¿Cómo editar Wikipedia?; Licencias Creative Commons; Editar Wikipedia con perspectiva de género; Educación en línea y cultura libre; Cómo subir contenido audiovisual a Wikimedia; Violencia de género: claves para (des)cribirla; Lenguas de América: desafíos para integrar otras voces a Wikipedia; Desafíos de la educación superior, and others.

Learning Story edit

In an unprecedented scenario, where we did not know how long the sanitary emergency would last, understanding, support, guidance and affection prevailed among the people of the organization, other chapters and the Foundation itself. After canceling our face-to-face events, trips and meetings, it took us two months to restructure our way of working, we generated alliances with other chapters, we investigated how we could organize events online, and we were improving them, for example:

Every time we agree on an Editathon or Editatona with an institution, a selection and curation of articles to be created, articles to be improved or expanded, is made. In this list, references are added, users are assigned, and there is a better relationship and monitoring of the contents prior to the day of the edition.
There are three separate virtual sessions: one for training on Wikipedia editing, the second for Wikidata and Wiki Commons, and the third for solving questions and answers.
When the day of the event arrives, we do a virtual meeting that lasts the entire editathon, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, or until 5:00 pm; in this session there are always people from the chapter connected to answer questions, share their screen, make suggestions. In turn, participants can also show the progress of their articles.

The area of education was also adapted in the same way to give courses, talks and workshops aimed at different educational institutions such as those already mentioned before.

Participation with other affiliates became more collaborative. The heuristic conception of the global environment itself led to the development of creativity and adaptation, leading to the creation of some events that addressed common problems, such as the conversations series Crear, compartir y conectar; o Lenguas de América: desafíos para integrar otras voces en Wikipedia.

The situation with the pandemic made us cancel our stipend with several suppliers, we moved our office supplies to a warehouse. And since non-essential businesses were closed, airlines canceled flights and face-to-face meetings could not be held, we were unable to exercise many of the expenses that we had scheduled, which will be made the following year.

As for the #WikiThursday, the face-to-face session was suppressed, those continue to be held remotely, in close communication.

Challenges edit

One of the main challenges is to give continuity to the work done for years in terms of the gender gap. We want more content about women, made by women, for everyone; as well as the incorporation of more Wikipedian women. We want to have a greater impact with the population in native languages, to be part of the content release movements in Creative Commons, to activate more events to donate collections, to establish greater alliances with institutions that jealously preserve their knowledge to release it.

Without a doubt, another great challenge was the experience with the pandemic, and being witnesses of all the changes that have occurred in society, from family nuclei to group dynamics. Pretty soon all kinds of events started happening online, and keeping the attention of our audience, volunteers, and the editors themselves was difficult, but not impossible. This challenge will continue to grow, since audiences are also exhausted from online events, so they will have to be more and more interesting, or disruptive, we will have to generate greater expectations in our events.

Until further indication, face-to-face events will have to wait, but we will respond to the celebrations of the twentieth anniversary of English and Spanish Wikipedia, as well as the tenth anniversary of Wikimedia Mexico, with virtual events, digital campaigns, content, testimonials, interviews, articles and , above all, more free knowledge.

Como en todo el mundo, vivimos el año más complicado y complejo de toda nuestra existencia: tuvimos que adaptarnos a una coyuntura de miedo y dolor individual, de pérdidas colectivas y de transformar nuestros hábitos como comunidad. En este proceso de adaptación, Wikimedia México tuvo que modificar y reinventarse ante los inconvenientes que hemos tenido en estos tiempos inusuales.

Pese a está situación, de manera muy alegre y esperanzadora, podemos reportar que en nuestros principales programas mantuvimos, y en ciertos casos aumentamos, la participación cumpliendo nuestras métricas, por ejemplo las editatonas, maratones de edición sobre mujeres hechos por mujeres.

En reporte final del WMMX Grant 2020 - 2021 presentamos los resultados obtenidos en el periodo julio 2020 - junio 2021. En el que destacamos la relocalización de algunos fondos destinados para actividades presenciales que, aún con nuestro optimismo a favor de que se levantara el confinamiento, no ocurrieron y tuvieron que verse realizadas nuevamente en línea. No obstante pudimos redirigir nuestros recursos a otras actividades que también resultaron muy enriquecedoras.

Nuestras actividades, encuentros, conversatorios, editatones y editatonas han sido todas en línea, y en cercana comunicación para su planeación. Nuestro Programa de Educación ha estado muy activo con diversas actividades y talleres en línea. Se concluyó la investigación de reducción de brecha de género: Nosotras escribimos Wikipedia, la participación de las mujeres en la enciclopedia libre y colaborativa en internet. Realizamos nuestro concurso de fotografía #WikiLovesMéxico 2021, con el cual se alimentó Wikimedia Commons con fotografías de comida mexicana. Hicimos el #WikiReto de edición de diversas plataformas Wikimedia. Tuvimos que festejar el 20 Aniversario de Wikipedia en español de forma virtual pero enviamos un presente a las personas socias y aliadas del capítulo y tuvimos una velada llena de brindis y anécdotas. Retomamos los cursos mensuales públicos y abiertos de Wikipedia, agregando uno exclusivo para mujeres, y Wikidata en línea. Y se han llevado varias actividades con la región también de manera activa y en línea.

La producción de 2 murales conmemorativos del 20 Aniversario de Wikipedia en español, en las ciudades de Puebla y Aguascalientes, donde tenemos comunidades activas de wikipedistas.

Otorgar 4 tarjetas de Amazon, con valor de 3000 MXN cada una, para los ganadores del Wiki Reto 2021, que consistió en realizar una serie de pasos documentados como: Editar un artículo, corregir algún error en Wikipedia, añadir referencias, donar fotografías a Wikimedia Commons, producir un artículo, etc.

1 cuenta de Zoom, que nos ha servido para sostener nuestras propias actividades en línea con la versatilidad, soltura y potencia requeridas.

20th Anniversary of Wikipedia in Spanish: En nuestro plan estaba la producción de una fiesta para la comunidad de Wikimedia México, la cual no se realizó, en su lugar mandamos producir 50 Gift Boxes para personas socias y aliadas, que contenían objetos conmemorativos del 20 aniversario.

Se convino con el equipo da que los fondos destinados a catering de los eventos presenciales fueran destinados para que se ofrecieran para los eventos en línea, a través de servicio de alimentos a domicilio con su respectiva comprobación a través de recibos de gasto por una suma determinada.

Gender Gap

Dado que los eventos presenciales para editar Wikipedia y dar cursos estaban cancelados, dedicamos los fondos de transporte, hospedaje y gastos a la producción de 100 copias de la investigación Nosotras escribimos Wikipedia, la participación de las mujeres en la enciclopedia libre y colaborativa en internet, que actualmente está en producción. Dichas copias serán distribuidas entre diversas instituciones y personas aliadas.

Content Creation

Los fondos destinados a transporte, hospedaje y gastos fueron relocalizados bajo los siguientes ítems:

50 grabados conmemorativos con un diseño particular para el 20 aniversario de Wikipedia en español. Mismos que fueron incluidos adicionalmente en las cajas de regalo a nuestras afiliadas, amigas y comunidad wikipedista en México. Ello incluye 50 playeras y 50 sets de stickers del mismo diseño.

Education

Los fondos destinados a transporte, hospedaje, gastos y el encuentro de educación se destinaron a la creación de un video adicional para los cursos de edición de Wikipedia que se implementaron en conjunto con la UNAM (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México), cuyo impacto se describe más adelante.

Administration

A causa de la pandemia se decidió no renovar el contrato de renta de la oficina, y los fondos destinados a su pago, así como internet, luz, agua, y gastos operacionales fueron suspendidos hasta que regresemos a la presencialidad. Se contrató el servicio de bodega para resguardar todos los objetos y materiales de oficina del capítulo.

Cómo adaptamos la realidad física a lo remoto

Como el movimiento Wikimedia, nuestra organización enfrentó uno de los retos más complicados de toda su historia. Como movimiento estamos enfrentando una emergencia también. Una de las grandes interrogantes que, tras el impacto de la pandemia a nivel mundial, como adaptaríamos nuestro trabajo habitual.

Para nuestra organización la interacción comunitaria es sumamente importante. Como grupo social hemos defendido que, además de aportar al conocimiento mundial, nos es sumamente relevante que la comunidad se sienta segura, tranquila, pero también que pase buenos momentos. ¿Cómo podríamos garantizar esto en una pantalla de Zoom? ¿Cómo poder mantener la unidad en un momento que nos sobrepasa? ¿Cómo hacer planeación estratégica local, regional y global en un proyecto que, si, está basado en la experiencia individual mediada en una pantalla, pero que como paradigma había tenido el reunir personas en sitios diferentes a trabajar por un sólo objetivo?

Primero, miramos con qué contábamos. En esencia, con una comunidad pese a la grave situación, que deseaba seguir, con ánimo de contribuir a la misión de Wikimedia desde donde se encuentre. Incluso, con la voluntad de poder contribuir a la lucha contra la desinformación y la pandemia misma desde nuestras capacidades wikipedistas.

Segundo, a aprender a medir los resultados ante un panorama que se miraba cerrado e indefinido. Aprender de las experiencias sobre la marcha nos ayudó a poder probar estrategias e integrarlas al flujo de trabajo del capítulo.

Tercero, a adaptar a la realidad temporal las herramientas disponibles.

Aprendizajes desarrollados:

Atender remotamente a un gran número de personas como en un editatón habitual. Lo logramos realizando un registro previo en el que preguntamos a las personas su nivel de experiencia wiki, sus temas de interés y tras ello realizamos una coordinación previa de curaduría de contenidos. En el día del evento, habilitamos una sala general en el programa Zoom como la versión física de la sala principal, en donde generalmente se abren los eventos con un taller inicial. Luego, las personas con mayor experiencia se dividían en salas más pequeñas.

Las herramientas permiten realizar una revisión secuencial de contenidos. El contar con tecnología remota de coordinación nos permitió realizar un método de revisión secuencial que, usando la función de “compartir pantalla”, permite hacer una corrección ágil y colectiva en la calidad de los contenidos contribuidas por personas novatas.

Probar modelos e ideas de forma ágil. Dentro de la ejecución de nuestros programas tuvimos que realizar un buen número de propuestas adaptativas de lo habitual a la pandemia. Conservar la flexibilidad como equipo y como afiliados es algo fundamental para poder idear modelos, ejecutarlos y evaluar su efectividad... en el plazo de una o dos semanas.
