  1. Link to one program story that showcases your organization's achievements in the past year.
Wikimedia México has been growing and keeping the pace in the evolving of their organizational mature. On the last months of 2018 we conducted a round of interviews to our community and our leaderships to build together a common view aiming to plan the next steps in the coming years. As a result of that consultancy we have now a document around an Analysis and recommendations for Institutional Strengthening which will be functioning as a guide in the next years and as a base of the development of the strategic process of the organization. At this point the chapter did not conduced any formal reflection of the current conditions and therefore a series of steps to follow. In addition one point that was a sensitive matter to our organization and our government relations and alliances was the change of federal administration on December 1st, 2018. The last time we had a similar moment was on 2012 when we had unforeseen consequences after the change of federal authorities. This time the good practices around this topic as well as the maturity of our chapter allowed that the change will not affect in any item of our plans in the country.
  2. Link to one learning story you have created or contributed to, that demonstrates how your organization documents and applies learning.

Gender Gap/Editatona

We are planning to keep functioning and growing our main project around Gender Gap. As a recognition of the value of this project last year we won two prizes in acknowledgment for contributing the effort and empowerment of women in technology: the Omecíhuatl Medal by Women Institute of Mexico City in August and LACNIC FRIDA Prize in November. Moreover Editatona initiative moved to a Mexican states expansion in states like Chihuahua, Sonora and Guadalajara. This motivates us to continue working for increase the women participation in Wikipedia, searching new alliances and new ventures and opportunities. In addition we still keep our support program to communities outside Mexico that not have an active Wikimedia affiliate or community as El Salvador.

We are planning the realization of 8 editatonas in Mexico and we have in plans the expansion to more institutions and new places that actually requested the work on this matter.

  • organize 8 editatonas in one year
  • 80 attendees in one year
  • 100 new articles in one year (we want to be conservative in this measure because we depend of a volatile criteria of deletion)
  • 150 new Wikidata items

Content creation

One of our main objectives in the organization is the content of creation so we still need creating and improving many articles about the topics and context of our country. We consider that many of Mexican institutions and organizations keep the interest on WMMX intended for the organization of activities around conten creation as trainings, talks, edithathons and discussions of Wikimedia projects, and with these activities the interaction of the community is sustained. In our permanent effort of decentralization of activities outside Mexico City, we propose to continue with activities outside of the capital.

In the last years we had a sustained rhythm of public events, which are still the most requested activities by our partners. It includes at least one per month editathons, talks and workshops. The activity depends on the needs of the organizations that invite us to collaborate. We already have fifteen institutions in wait list.

  • at least 2 per month during the requested period
  • 100 attendees during the year
  • 180 new articles during the year
  • 100 Wikidata new items during the year

Wikimedia Mexico has gained greater visibility in the territory by holding events outside of Mexico City and by the awards that Editatona project has granted, this has attracted new alliances with public and private institutions and organizations. As a non official policy in the organization we are always trying to find new allies to keep fresh our spirit of creativity, innovation and fun in the accomplishment of Wikimedia mission in our country. Some examples of that is the creation of an initiative around the fight against corruption allied with the expert NGO Mexicanos Contra la Corrupción y la Impunidad (Mexicans against Corruption and Impunity) planned to be a Latin American regional initiative. Also we have in talks with some stakeholders a plan around fact checking and news as reliability sources. Examples of new allies are Marea Verde Cajeme (a local feminist collective), Government of the State of Chiapas, Government of the State of Jalisco (state governments). Of course we have considered keep the work with our existing alliances and we are always pursuing and fostering new projects and ideas with all of them.

In addition we are leading the effort behind a new Iberoocop's initiative around a Latin American Month based in the model of Wikipedia Asian Month. We are coordinating this plan with Wikimedia affiliates of the region.

  • Reach at least 50 participants in partnerships related activities.
  • Reach at least 50 new users derived from partnerships related activities
  • Reach at least 400 donated items derived from partnerships activities
  • Reach at least 2 new partners

Cultural alliances

Opening of OpenGLAM Mexico.

In 2018 we held the first Open GLAM meeting in Latin America. After the success of that event we plan to repeat it to increase partnerships with organizations interested in free culture with a focus on a hands-on event.

  • Reach at least 50 participants in partnerships related activities.
  • Reach at least 50 new users derived from partnerships related activities
  • Reach at least 2 new partners for the chapter

One of the obstacles we have faced in terms of Wikimedia and Education is the lack of a person that can attend educational activities during office and schools hours. We have opportunities in Mexico with interested persons and institutions but this specific challenges makes necessary the hiring of a person with a expert educational profile to carry the educational program, which we are sure will grow.

  • Reach at least 150 participants
  • Reach at least 100 new users, 30% women.
  • Reach at least 100 new articles and Wikidata items

II Educational Meeting

We will have a person hired to conduct the educational program so we are sure that we will grow. For this reason we thought that we should keep the education meeting: two days to bring together teachers from different states of Mexico to share and learn about Wikipedia in education.

  • Reach 20 news participants to the event
  • Attract 3 new teachers to the program

Administration and operational activities

Wikimedia Mexico Board meeting in Puebla.

Wikimedia México is a chapter of the Wikimedia movement that has been characterized by its sustained growth, by its vocation of collaboration and articulation of efforts with many Wikimedia affiliates as well as by the sustained realization of projects that are an example in the region. While we are aware of our shortcomings and the challenges ahead, we are a unique example in the movement over the years of how interesting projects can be carried out with all the power and willingness of volunteering, our most valuable asset. We are happy to start a transition towards a more professional organization with full-time and half-time staff that can coordinate all the spirit and energy of our volunteering.

Board meeting

To comply with our bylaws and achieve a better governance, we will continue to hold three face-to-face meetings of the WMMX Board.

Community support

Wikimania is one of the most motivating experiences for a wikimedian but due to the limitations of global scholarships only 3 persons in WMMX have attended to more than Wikimania (taking on account that we hosted the meeting in 2015). So we want to increase the representation of our organisation and our country in the global meeting of our movement and motivate our volunteers.

  • At least two persons traveling to Wikimania 2019 with an WMMX scholarship.
  • At least two reports or knowledge sharing of attendance to Wikimania

Diversity/Indigenous languages

According to the goal of diversity and inclusion that current discussions of Wikimedia Strategy 2030 propose and bonding with Wikimedia general goal, this year we will continue with the activities focused in the creation of the Wikipedia in Mayan language, the third language most spoken in Mexico after Spanish and Nahuatl.

In 2016 and 2018 the activities of Wikimaya were sponsored by Secretariat of Culture but now that institution entered a phase of budget austerity. So, we want to continue the project with our own sources. The edition of Yucatec Mayan wikipedia in Incubator is harder than Spanish version, so is more difficult encourage the participation. Moreover, the connectivity in mayan communities is limited, so the access to guidelines online is also usually complicated.

  • Keep the support of the creation of a Mayan Wikipedia community.
  • Create and distribute resources (online and printed) materials and resources to help edit Incubator.

Midpoint reportEdit

This is a brief report on the grantee's progress during the midpoint reporting period: July 1 to December 31, 2019.

Program storyEdit

Please link to one program story that showcases your organization's achievements during the reporting period.

Please add text or a link to a page with details on your program progress. This should including reporting against each of the SMART objectives form your proposal.
