The Project Grants program funds Wikimedia community members — individuals, groups, or organizations contributing to Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia or Commons — to organize projects that benefit the Wikimedia movement. Grants are awarded biannually and have a minimum budget of USD 2,000. For grants under USD 2,000, please see the Rapid Grants program.
Grants are generally awarded in four broad categories, but we welcome all ideas!
- Software
- Research
- Online organizing
- Offline outreach
Proposals should support the achievement of Wikimedia’s mission and align with our 2030 Strategy.
You can click on the tabs above to learn more about the process of applying. If you are new to wikis and need more guidance to start a proposal, please email us at projectgrants wikimedia · org and we will help you.
We recently surveyed the first two rounds of Project Grant applicants. You can see the report and next steps for program improvements.
