This is the report of a grant for a series of translations of materials from the Movement Strategy. The goal was to increase the accessibility and inclusion of the Lusophone community and increase their autonomy. Especially materials that can broaden the possibility of the emergence of projects aligned with the Strategy.

During the process of approval, this proposal was updated with the intent to reflect the immediate needs of the portuguese speaking community.

I had conversations with some members of the affiliate group Wiki Movimento Brasil (the largest in lusophony ) who were involved in an action to promote debates around the MS, including a research within the community, to better understand their needs in terms of information around the Movement Strategy. I spoke directly with Lucas Piantá, who is responsible for this research.

I also had a meeting with two MS|G staff, Yop Rwang Pam and Tila Cappelletto to understand the Wikimedia Foundation´s point of view. That way, the list of content that I translated was based in a common place between what was best for both the Foundation and the lusophone community.

To increase the accessibility and inclusion of the Lusophone community and increase their autonomy. During these conversations I got very positive feedback regarding the relevance of content translations, especially because this is one of the items cited by people who responded to the Wiki Movimento Brasil survey about the movement's strategy: the need for more information about the movement in Portuguese. In addition, another important piece of feedback was that the Portuguese-speaking community still considers itself to be quite uninformed about the Movement's global initiatives, including Strategy and Governance, which reinforces the importance of actions aimed at improving the community's level of information for their greater participation and inclusion in the Movement.

Thus, this project was designed not only to serve any Portuguese-speaking person looking for information on Meta, but also to support the previously mentioned actions of the Wiki Movimento Brasil.

Since this was a three-month long project, I talked to the person responsible for the research and its presentation to the community, Lucas Piantá, to know which topics he would cover in the presentation, so that I could coordinate my work in a way that would suit the audience of this presentation, that is to say, which materials should be translated first. Thus, when the presentation of the research on the movement strategy took place, the participants were able to access the links I had already translated at Meta on the topics covered.

I would say that the final result was better than what was expected when I started this proposal, since it was possible to articulate this translation project with a specific and concrete community action. Without a doubt, seeing an immediate use of the translated material was a very good result.

Overall I think the work went very well.

I had some difficulty accessing certain parts of the material for translation. I'll talk more about this in "Anything Else" topic.

  • What would you do differently next time?

What I would do differently next time is to expand the idea of translating the contents of Meta to create material that not only translates, but also summarizes the content and/or comminutes the information already available in a more didactic and effective way. Undoubtedly we have a lot of information available, but few actions aimed at communicating with the community - especially in the case of my non-English speaking community.

This was an individual grant of remuneration for translation work. The funds were used to support all material expenses such as power, wifi, hardware used and of course the human expenses with my working hours and food.

Anything else you want to share about your project? In general, the work developed without major obstacles and within the deadlines. For my part, I would like to thank all the people who reviewed and approved this grant for their time. This was my first individual grant proposal and I was very pleased with the result.

In addition, I would like to give feedback for future translation work: in some moments during my work, it was necessary to request authorization to access certain parts of the content that were blocked for translation. This is common in Meta, especially when it comes to tables and forms. It was important to let you know that this ends up being a hindrance to this type of work because these are actions that do not depend on the volunteer or grantee, but on the availability of a staff member with this access and, of course, on the communication between the grantee/volunteer and the staff.
