Project Plan edit

Activities edit

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

We will be doing one editathon on March 26th, 2020 from 12-4pm at the University of the Pacific (UOP) Library. The focus of this editathon is on notable San Joaquin women. During the editathon there will be two training sessions for people who are new to editing.

2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.

We will collaborate with teaching faculty who will bring their students to the event. This will provide the majority of our participants from the University community. We will also be inviting additional UOP faculty, staff, administration and friends through the university’s online newsletter, as well as posting flyers around campus. We will create a Facebook Event to invite the broader San Joaquin County community.

3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?

We will have at least four experienced editors leading the event. The editors will be providing two trainings, as well as one-on-one support. We also have endorsements of support from the University of the Pacific Libraries, it’s Special Collections and Archives, the history department, and the Gender Studies program.

4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Participants will be encouraged to bring their own devices (laptops or tablets); however we can provide laptops. In addition, we will be providing a list of areas where participants can begin contributing content related to women of San Joaquin County, including Delia Locke, Iola Brubeck, Tillie Lewis, and additional women linked from “List of people from Stockton, CA.” We hope to educate editors on writing and reduce gender representational disparities in Wikipedia. The University of the Pacific Libraries and it’s Holt-Atherton Special Collections and Archives has access to many resources (online databases, open access journals, primary and secondary source materials) that editors can use for improving articles. In our first editathon (October 11, 2019), we had 48 editors participate to create 998 edits. We hope to increase our number of editors at this event.

5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

After the event, we will send out a follow up email thanking our participants, celebrating the impact of our event, soliciting feedback they have, and inviting them to our next editathon in the fall of 2020.

6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

Impact edit

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:

  1. Number of events: 1
  2. Number of participants: 40
  3. Number of new editors: 30
  4. Number of of articles created or improved: 200
  5. Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events)

Resources edit

What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

We will have at least 4 experienced Wikimedians who will attend the events. Library staff will help with marketing and are providing the venue for free.

What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.

  • $300 - refreshments
  • $200 - mileage for Wikipedia editors
  • $50 - posters and handouts
