Goals edit

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

A lot. This was the first year we run WLE in Colombia and the results are amazing.

Outcome edit

Please report on your original project targets.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
50 participants 200 Target reached. The CentralNotice Banner and being part of a International-scale contest seems to attract more people than we get in other kind of contests that we run by ourselves and only in Colombia. According to the Tool for Wiki Loves Photo Competitions most part (92%) of them are new users (awesome!) but we also achiveve to engage old users, one of them even get in touch with the User Group and helped during the contest giving answer to newbies.
500 photos uploaded 1538 (1614) Target reached. The Tool for Wiki Loves Photo Competitions shows 1538, but commons:Campaign:wle-co shows 1615 photos. Both are amazing outcomes for the contest as we didn't expected that number of photos so we're really excited about the final number of photos that overwhelmed our first expectation.
50 images used on Wikimedia projects 58 Target reached. Quality photos were added to articles, and even to Wikidata items.

Learning edit

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

We received a lot more photos than expected. CentralNotice and the fact to be part of something greater than ourselves (an international worldwide contest) could be the reason of this. Also, lot of new users added themselves to the WhatsApp groups of Wikimedians of Colombia asking questions about the contest. This also worked well because we can answer more easily and quickly via WhatsApp. This worked so well that we had to create a new group for the members of the User Group to talk on internal issues. The old group was rebranded as «Ayuda-Wikimedistas de Colombia» (Help-Wikimedians of Colombia) and will stay active after the contest. Old users that before didn't use to help in the group engaged helping newbies to take part in the contest and solving doubts. And we think that's great!

  • What did not work so well?

For our contest Wikivacaciones, we created all the material necessary for tutorials (create an account, upload images, etc). At start we redirect users to that page. We thought it was clear that those paged belong to another contest but could be used for WLE too. That created a little chaos, when users keep tracking the page of Wikivacaciones and not the WLE and using a link to the Upload Campaign of the former and not to the Upload Campaign of WLE. We ha to manually change all the Templates and campaign codes of the users that uploaded wrongly their photos.

This time we tried an alternative to Amazon giving gift-cards from a local online store (Linio). The idea was to avoid the high and volatile exchange rates paying in colombian pesos. We had a contact in the company that would help us in the process of buy the cards and redeem them but he quite the company and no one else answer our emails. We tried to follow our original plan but after several months trying to get an answer from the company we decided to change of service. In the discussion we lose a lot of time. We definitively discard use the service of Linio again. Despite de high exchange rates, Amazon is the easiest way to deliver prizes. Another alternative that we may use in the future is to buy the goods and deliver them directly, but that cost more time from our volunteers.

  • What would you do differently next time?

We created new tutorials (based on those of Wikivacaciones) in the page of WLE Colombia, and editing all the information to avoid confusion. For future contest now we know that all the information should be in the same page and not to redirect users to pages of other contests, even if the information there could be useful.
