Learning edit

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
  1. The WLA 2020 in Nigeria explored the diversity in the structure of Wikimedia User Group Nigeria to spur all the clubs and hubs into action.
  2. The local organizer introduced the use of the daily publication of metrics called Local Banter, the approached post daily update of contribution per participating unit. This approach created competition among the participants on one hand and the entire community on the other hand.

    Local Banter
  3. We also created a daily review of photos. The concept includes a random selection of images from the pool of submitted photos for the contest then we tell a brief story about the content. The approach helps to engage our teeming followers on social media.
  4. We explored the benefit of the popularity of social media to communicate the needs and project milestones to participants.
  5. We introduced a training the trainer approach for leaders of the group that participated in the competition.
  • What did not work so well?
  1. Although, the Wiki Loves Africa 2020 ( WLA 2020) in Nigeria had started before the Policy banning the physical gathering of people in Nigeria due to the COVID19 Pandemic. The Launch of the event in Lagos did not take place until the pronouncement to ban gathering of people in Nigeria by the Federal Government of Nigeria and WMF was announced. However, since the majority of all the proposed events have taken place and even our set target already met. The local organizer had decided to cancel the launch of the WLA 2020 in Lagos. Payment made for the Mini Hall and Catering were refunded at a 50% ( Refreshment) and 45% ( Event Centre) penalty fee. Aside from these two items, every other thing went well.
  2. Wikimedia Fan Clubs are situated inside tertiary institutions in Nigeria, some of these institutions were off session when we organised the event. Though some of the students were gathered to organise the event but the result could have been better.
  3. Many of the students said a lack of image capturing device affected their participation in the competition. So, they hired a professional camera for their photo hunt.

  • What would you do differently next time?
  1. We will ensure that school calender are considered where applicable before our subswquent events that will use this approach.
  2. We hope to include in our budget for retage of Camera for each institution where the majority of the members do nothave.
