Learning edit

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

We generally succeed in creating more awareness of Wiki Loves Africa Contest in Tanzania community and many people showed interest in Wiki Loves Africa. We were able to do two photo hunts which resulted to over 500 photos In particular many professional photographers showed interest in Wiki Loves Africa Photo competition. It turned out that the Winner for the contest in Tanzania is a 16 secondary school girl

  • What did not work so well?

Although we were able to collect more than 800 photos, some of the photographers didn’t show up during uploading sessions which led them to miss the dead line.Due to that the overall photos uploaded went up to 569 Photos There was a little participation of Women in Photo hunts and photo uploading sessions. Although many people have shown interest to participate in a contest, they didn’t have the right tools for capturing good quality photos Having participants from distant areas (out of Dar es Salaam) resulted to contribution of some photos which either lacks the right categories or low quality photos and sometime photos which are out of theme.

  • What would you do differently next time?
  1. Encourage more Women to participate in photo contests
  2. Both photo hunts and uploading sessions to take place early to ensure every person with photos upload them on Wikimedia Commons on time.
  3. Finding a way to give online training for the participants living outside Dar es Salaam on how to best contribute to Wikicommons
  4. Encourage participants to have the right tools for capturing quality photos.
