Goals edit

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Yes, we are very happy with the outcomes of the project. The entire project was a success. Our expectations after organizing Wiki Loves Folklore were to have at least 5 percent images used from the total of the 19,052 images we received this year in the photography campaign. And this initiative got us a total file usage of 7305 images which is about 38 percent of the Wiki Loves Folklore photography contest.

Outcome edit

Please report on your original project targets. Please be sure to review and provide metrics required for Rapid Grants.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
Number of participants = 40 22 Our overall participation was affected by the confusion that the main WPWP project was about common usage about any media on Wikipedia as opposed to the media used from particular files. Some people reported that they used only the hashtag WPWP which was mandatory for the core campaign but they forgot and some got confused and used the #WPWP instead of the hashtag stated on the campaign page, due to which we could not calculate the users that did not follow the right hashtag in their edit summaries.
Number of photos integrated from Wikimedia Commons 500 7305 We are proud that the total file usage was more than 35% of the original target.
Number of Wikipedia/Wikidata pages or items improved with photos 200 2477

Learning edit

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

We tried to give pilot workshops to individuals who were interested in learning about the illustration of articles. That got a good response from the individuals and helped them find the relevant images and use them in the related topics of folklore from the contest category.

  • What did not work so well?

Participation with the larger program got users confused with the main contest and the sub contest which had focused only on folklore contests. Many individuals missed the right addition to the edit summary of the articles which affected their contributions within the Wiki Loves Folklore illustration contest but since this was a pilot, we got a really good result in the first pilot.

  • What would you do differently next time?

Next year we will do dedicated outreach, webinars and more workshops for the participants from different language communities a few months before the contest to improve participation and outreach.
