Goals edit

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went? Yes we are satisfied with how the project went. It brought together many contributors from under-represented communities of Africa, Asian and Latin communities apart from the European regions. The project was organized on Wikimedia Commons. The results have been overwhelmingly positive and we were happy to receive a female contributor as the overall highest uploader of quality images to the campaign.

500 participants	399 participants from over 101 countries	We gathered 399 uploaders which was slightly lower than our estimated target due to the ongoing pandemic and circumstantial conditions in several countries where gathering for cultural festivals did not happen this year as precaution by their governments. However, our target for diverse contributions across the world was achieved with great representation from Asia and Africa.

What worked well?

This year we extended opportunities to the national teams from fourteen countries to organize Wiki Loves Folklore in their respective countries.

We had the opportunity to share more information about the contest with many international media organisations and photographers who supported us. We also improved our website's use which made it easier for non wikimedians to better understand the project. This also saw traffic from global photographers who got in touch with us to join our virtual training sessions since they were newbies. That notwithstanding, our social media presence also had other Photographers mostly from Africa reaching out in the same vein.

This year, we organized discussions and training with some of our coordinator's both new and old from Zambia, Benin, Kenya, Rwanda and Ghana to assist them with strategies in order to execute the campaign successfully. We also shared resources such as webinars from other wiki loves campaign teams to collaboratively improve Wikimedia with accurate and quality images on the platform for reuse.

We are also astonished with the level of zeal and passion the jury international team did a splendid job in supporting the jury work of this contest exhibited during the whole process of judging.

What did not work so well?

The pandemic created limited opportunities for people to be able to fully participate in the cultural documents of the festivals and general travelling. We hope that next year brings more ease in the ongoing conditions and people can be better equipped to support the project with their participation in cultural events.
We also tried to accommodate winners from all countries, but there were complications - some of their payment portals were tricky and did not accept international cards so we tried to se other means such as paypal/payoneer.

What would you do differently next time?

We would like to make available language translators who would aid in Communications and text transcription during meetings and training. This we believe will increase participation to a much wider audience. We also wish to reach out to the regions where the participation of wikimedia communities is not very strong so they can learn not about the Wikimedia Projects but also are able to contribute to the project's mission to bring cultural heritage on the internet in free licenses. We wish to do professional online outreach through google ads to reach out to photography and heritage enthusiast groups for better and wider reach in those regions.

Everything was quick and transparent. WLF is well prepared!
It was very good. Next year we could approach more folklore related groups.in social media much prior to the competition.
It's really easy to share my photos with the whole world for free use. I couldn't be happier with my competition participation experience.
The experience is always overwhelming. Knowing that this is an international and prestigious contest, being able to have a spot on the finalist is more than enough

My experience of working as an international jury of the Wiki Loves Folklore 2021 Commons competition went very well. As in previous years it was an excellent experience especially for a wonderful approach to folklore.
That was a very pleasant experience. Organizers were very methodical and flexible;
Very good; we got many very good and very interesting photos this year, it was a joy to view and assess them.
I think the evaluation part works great. Would be great also if we had more diversity in competition from more cultures/countries.
Everything did work very well this year.

This feedback gives us so much strength and excitement that amidst the persistence of the pandemic, contributors around the world painstakingly helped increase folk stories through images and audiovisuals to make Wikimedia better. Also, we are sure to make the experience much better in the coming years with more partnerships and participation to reach everyone with no language barrier.
