Report accepted
This report for a Rapid Grant approved in FY 2016-17 has been reviewed and accepted by the Wikimedia Foundation.

Goals edit

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Yes, we ran a one-day editathon and had a good mix of both new editors and existing editors. Participants added new contents or edited existing article or translated an Japanese article to English and Chinese. 2 experienced editors we invited worked well, participants gained clearer understandings of what the Wikipedia and open data are and how to edit it by their lectures and advice.

Outcome edit

Please report on your original project targets.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
30 participants 17 participants
30 new editors 13 new editors
4 articles created or improved 3 new, 1 updated, 2 translated Participants created 3 new articles [1][2][3], improved 1 article [4] and translated 1 Japanese article to [5](en), [6](zh)

Learning edit

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
  1. According to the questionnaire, 78% of participants were extremely satisfied with this workshop and the remaining 22% said "satisfied". It seems that the campus tour and the library tour were especially well received by participants.
  2. Owing to the books and articles prepared in advance by librarians, participants had immediate access to good sources. We librarian also showed the ability to search and offer information to the user during editing.
  3. Co-working of new editors and existing editors was good, new editors could learn how to edit articles by experienced editors smoothly.
  4. To encourage editing the contents, we told if new editors have any questions, you can ask the two experienced volunteers even after the event.
  5. We also had a train-the-trainer event so that we could learn about management problems in the editathons or important policies of Wikipedia.
  6. The explanation of the editathon and Wikipedia was published in the local newspaper as a result of issuing a press release.
  • What did not work so well?
  1. The number of the participants was smaller than we had expected. Although we promoted our event via the local news paper, website, social media, poster and personal communication, it seems that the event of whole day may be a difficult hurdle for those who consider joining. We should carefully examine schedules next time.
  • What would you do differently next time?
  1. To get more participants, we would like to seek opportunities to further enhance cooperation in researchers, local government, public libraries, schools etc. We also expect positive word-of-mouth from participants in this editathon.
  2. Next time, we would like to host events with online help by the veteran editors instead of inviting them from outside our city. The cooperation with the experienced editors living in Sapporo we met in this event may work well in the future.

Finances edit

1,000 JPY was paid to receive the wire transfer; and therefore, only 204,000 JPY of the grant funds sent were available to use for the grant.

Grant funds spent edit

Please describe how much grant money you spent for approved expenses, and tell us what you spent it on.

  1. Travel expenses between Tokyo and Sapporo = 144,600YEN ≒ $1,395 (79,640YEN for ks aka 98 + 64,960YEN for Kazuhiro Okada)
  2. Soft drink = 4,966YEN ≒ $49

Total spent = 149,566YEN ≒ 1,444 USD

Remaining funds edit

Remaining funds from this grant have been returned to WMF in the amount of 54,434 JPY.

Do you have any remaining grant funds?

We have 54,434YEN remaining. We would like to return the funds by wire.

Anything else edit
