Goals edit

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

We exceeded some of our goals, in terms of number of contributors and number of photos. Besides that, we were pleasently surprised with the quality of the submissions received, and had a positive experience with the external judges. I believe this was key for Portugal having a winning photograph in the international edition this year. The exhibition is scheculed for Summer 2022, so we will add the report for that in Grants:Project/Rapid/WMPT/Wiki Loves Earth Exhibit Tour later this year.

Outcome edit

Please report on your original project targets. Please be sure to review and provide metrics required for Rapid Grants.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
100-150 participants 106 (81% new editors) Number of participants was within target, although at the lower end of the interval.
1500-2000 photos 3287 photos The number of photos was about double what we anticipated based on previous years. And we were very happy not only with the quantity but also with the quality of the submissions.
15-20% of photos used in at least one project 7% (225 photos) We didn't reach our goal of photos used, possibly due to the much higher number of photos than anticipated. Nevertheless, we should probably arrange for activities to add pictures to articles or writing competitions where participants can add these photos to their articles.

Learning edit

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

Our partners at CIIMAR / University of Porto helped with communication and organizing the external jury, which was tremendously helpful. This is probably why we saw an increase in quality in the photo submissions this year.

  • What did not work so well?

Deadlines for the submission of the finalists to the international competition was very short given that we held the competition in the last possible month. This created some pressure to submit the finalists. The jury nevertheless wanted to make some changes to the final ranking after the deadline, and the international team graciously allowed that to happen.

  • What would you do differently next time?

For next time, we would like to setup a more detailed timeline of the competition, even if just tentative, particularly for the pre-selection and jury phases, so as everyone knows what to expect. This is difficult to do, however, because it depends on availability of the volunteers (organizors, pre-selectors and jury) and there is not a lot of time between the end of the submission period and the deadline to send the finalists to the international competition.

Finances edit

Grant funds spent edit

Please describe how much grant money you spent for approved expenses, and tell us what you spent it on.

We have spent 1000€ on the prizes (1st, 2nd, 3rd overall, and best wildlife photo).

Remaining funds edit

Do you have any remaining grant funds?

Yes, we haven't spent the 640 € in the photo exhibit yet, as it is scheduled for the summer of 2022. We wish to retain that ammount until then and to report on it along with Grants:Project/Rapid/WMPT/Wiki Loves Earth Exhibit Tour, if possible. We wish to also retain the 20 € for printing certificates and 40 € for communication, to be spent in the run up to the exhibit.

Remaining funds have been used or will be used for other approved mission-aligned activities. This use has been requested in writing and approved by WMF.
