Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went? The essence of the Grants:Project/Rapid/Tochiprecious/Imo State Wikimedia Projects Awareness and Edit a thon is to create awareness of Wikimedia Projects to Igbos in Imo State, train them on how to contribute especially to Igbo Wikipedia, Igbo Wiktionary and WikiCommons, to also bring volunteers together to help contribute to digitize /increase the number of Articles on the Igbo Wikipedia Language Platform through translations and creation of Articles. But due to the corona virus pandemic which hindered the offline event, we resorted to taking the program online via different meeting channels like Zoom and Google Meet. To an extent, I can say the goal was met as the awareness creation was not just in Imo state now. We had participants from Imo State, Enugu State, Anambra State and Abuja.

A series of 3 offline awareness creation in the form of workshops was planned on the 11th of March 2020 but the stakeholders chose 25th of March 2020 which could not take place due to the current COVID-19 pandemic that had all offline events suspended. We instead had 2 WhatsApp trainings on the 28th of March and 15th of April 2020 to make sure participants do not loose interest. The first was to educate them on the different Wikimedia projects and how they can get involved. We had 23 active participants. The second was training them on how to translate articles from English to Igbo Wikipedia. We had 16 new editors but 2 persons translated articles as others were still having difficulties. - What worked well?
1. Moving from offline to online was a success but quite challenging at first.
2. I realized I couldn’t use the outreach dashboard to document for Igbo Wiktionary edits as it is yet to be recognized hence the different links.
3. The add words challenge was also a success as it gave room for more words to be added in the Igbo Wiktionary. There were 629 words before we started but there are now 700 words in the Igbo Wiktionary. I wish to adopt this in future projects.
- What did not work so well?
1. The training was intended to create offline awareness of Wikimedia Projects in Imo State but this couldn’t work due to the Pandemic. We resorted to creating a WhatsApp group with the Young African Leaders Initiative Imo State Chapter were we began creating the awareness online.
2. During the online training via Zoom and Google Meet, some participants had internet connection issues including myself, which made them being on and off during the training. It made some frustrated and did not reconnect after the experience of being logged out. Our workaround was to post a step by step guide to add words to Igbo Wiktionary and Wikipedia on the WhatsApp group.
3. Most participants found the online training on translating on Igbo Wikipedia difficult, I feel more event days to teach them this would have been more appreciated.
- What would you do differently next time?
1. Having a more extended training period (i.e. longer event days), especially on Igbo Wikipedia Traning.
2. An extended challenge period will ensure more and more contents added plus more participant interest.

Please describe how much grant money you spent for approved expenses, and tell us what you spent it on.
Both the first offline event fixed on 25th of March 2020; the second and third were suspended as a result of the pandemic. Unfortunately before the cancellation of the offline event, all necessary payments for the first event had already been made as the email/notification of the cancellation came three days before the scheduled event.
So in other not to let the project die down, we decided to take the workshop online. Below is the detail of the money spent for the first suspended offline event:
- Internet – 26,000 Naira
- Venue – 50,000 Naira
- Projector – 10,000 Naira
- Food and Drinks – N75,200
For the Online continuation of the project:
- Internet 26,000 x 4 events = 104,000

- 1st highest editor (Tecno camon android phone) - 65,000 Naira
- 2nd highest editor – (Tecno Spark 4 android phone) - 52,000 Naira
- 3rd highest editor (Tecno Pouvoir android phone) - 40,000 Naira
- Data for first participants in each live event: 4,600 X 5(live events): 23,000 Naira

The project was both a challenge and a new learning process for me. Due to the Corona Virus pandemic that brought a halt to offline events, I had to restrategize and find new ways to keep the interest of the people. Although I couldn’t have the agreed offline event with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps scheduled for 12th September, I’m still glad the online event brought about partcipation from other states. It also helped me gain experience in facilitating events online and also having to collaborate with the community virtually instead of the usual offline. The collaboration with the community Igbo Wikimedians User Group also helped a lot for instance one day I was about to start training and the internet was poor from my end; logging me off and on, Uzoma Ozurumba got my back from her end and facilitated the training as she had a better network. I would say the program was a great learning experience. The project also served as a way of keeping our community active during the pandemic as well as getting the new editors involved in other projects that were going on in the Igbo Wikimedians User Group, from the outreach dashboard, one could see that the new editors participated in other projects as well.
