Learning edit

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

The Wikipedia for Community Outreach Programme worked well amidst all odds as it was organized in a well-equipped and serene environment to encourage the would-be participants. I was able to canvass for and gain the library management support for the venues used. Participants had hands-on practical with computers and smart phones during the training sessions at the E-Classrooms of the Kenneth Dike Library, that was within the university library environment. There was also good publicity and awareness about the programme throughout the social media channels- like the WhatsApp, Facebook, LinkedIn and Telegram. The members of the academia (these includes students, staff and faculty members), LARISSA, NLA, Wikimedia User Group Nigeria became fully aware about the Wikipedia outreach event and the Edit-A-Thon event at LARIS, University of Ibadan.

  • What did not work so well?

There was an unforeseen hindrance to the event participation by the industrial strike actions on campus that was initiated by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) throughout the Federal Universities in Nigeria. Therefore, the strike action hindered some from in person attendance and participation as many of the students were displaced at the period.

Apart, from the industrial action that affected students’ participation, some participants were unable to enroll and join the outreach dashboard due to network issues. Other participants encountered difficulties in accessing the outreach dashboard. There was also internet fluctuations and poor network connectivity issues that affected their active participation. Epileptic power supply also affected at some point during the training.

  • What would you do differently next time?

I shall organize a staff training session and edit a thon, or join any other existing Wikimedia campaigns and engage young adults and interested persons in my community.
